Black Square on Boot Screen after last update

Hi everybody, I made the last security update of OSX on May 25th, (osx 10.9.3), and iTunes 11.2.2 on June 10th.

I do not use to reboot so much the computer, but I do that every 10 or 20 days. After one of those updates, I got these screen while booting up the computer:

User uploaded file

As you can see, there is a black square, with the cursor over it. I can move the cursor and the computer seems to start without problems (actually faster) but showing that square. The other difference is also that now I cannot see the usual spinner under the apple logo.

I do not have any kind of boot camp or other OS installed. I have only changed the HD for an SSD one, but this was at november of last year, and everything has worked without problems until this date.

If anybody can give an idea on how to solve it, or if I am the only one who is havving this issue, please, post it here.

Thank you very much

It is not happening in SafeMode.

I suppose you know there are "two" screens on startup. One with the Apple and the spinner before the OS started, and another just after that one which shows also the Apple but no spinner. I see the difference between them because on the second one the display preferences (color temperature, contrast...) are yet applied. The second one is part of the transition effect from the apple screen to the fade in desktop.

The issue happens exactly on the second one. That's why in safe mode is not happening, because that screen is different.

I say this because maybe it helps.

Thanks again

I checked if disabling the auto login on startup there is any change, but not, the black squares appears, then hides for a while leaving a full grey screen that takes me to the login screen

The same with autologin, but when the square hides, the grey screen takes me to the desktop.

(The grey screen is the default screen with the apple logo)

Finally solved:

I had installed the iDisplay app for sharing screens. As CT said, the problems was with one of the kernels extensions I had loaded.

First of all, I uninstalled the iDisplay app, but the kernel extensions kept loading, so I browsed the internet and renamed the packages of the loaded kernel extensions:

[kext loaded] com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMFramebuffer (3.3.2 - SDK 10.6) Support

[kext loaded] com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMVideoDevice (3.3.2 - SDK 10.6) Support

these are at /System/Library/Extensions

you can unload them using kextunload, but I wasn't able to unload, so I renamed the packages:

MacBook-Pro-de-Ignacio:Extensions jefazo666$ mv MSMFramebuffer.kext/ MSMFramebuffer.kext_/

mv: rename MSMFramebuffer.kext/ to MSMFramebuffer.kext_/: Permission denied

MacBook-Pro-de-Ignacio:Extensions jefazo666$ sudo !!

sudo mv MSMFramebuffer.kext/ MSMFramebuffer.kext_/

MacBook-Pro-de-Ignacio:Extensions jefazo666$ mv MSMVideoDevice.kext/ MSMVideoDevice.kext_/

mv: rename MSMVideoDevice.kext/ to MSMVideoDevice.kext_/: Permission denied

MacBook-Pro-de-Ignacio:Extensions jefazo666$ sudo !!

sudo mv MSMVideoDevice.kext/ MSMVideoDevice.kext_/

MacBook-Pro-de-Ignacio:Extensions jefazo666$ sudo reboot now

and rebooted. Problem solved.

I did not removed totally the packages for the moment, because if somethings goes wrong, I can restore them from recovery mode.

Thanks to all who helped!
