I upgraded to Maverick and my printer: Canon MX850 no longer works. I downloaded drivers from canon website but did not seem to work

First, delete the driver you downloaded. OS X includes a driver for your printer:

I would delete the printer from the system, restart, and the system should "find" your printer.

System Preference/Print & Scan - select the printer and hit the minus sign at the bottom.
