Q: iMessage reports "delivered" (but isn't) before I can send as SMS.

Usually the iOS Messaging apps on our family of iPhones works great, and integrates well with iMessage on our apple computers.  An exception occurs frequently with my son's phone.   If he is not on a wifi network and I send him a message from my iPhone (with both have 4Ss), I get a "delivered" message right away, but he does not receive the message until he gets home to our wifi network.

If I can manage to touch the message super-quickly and select "Send as Text Message," the message does get through as an SMS.  But usually the "delivered" message comes up too fast.

So 2 questions:

  • Any ideas why I am getting (consistently) an "delivered" message when the message has not been delivered?  Any ideas on how to fix that?
  • Is there an quick and easy way to "force" a message to be sent by SMS?  I can shut off iMessage, but this is rather cumbersome.  I have heard that one could hold the "Send" button and it would turn from blue to green, but I have not been able to make that work with my system.

Any insights will be appreciated!

    Hey Rangeley,

Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with iMessage. The following resource outline some great troubleshooting, including information on troubleshooting your specific symptom:

    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755

    […]

If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps

    1. Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.

    2. Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.

    3. If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.

    4. If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.

    5. Back up and restore your device as new.

    […]

If your iMessages didn't transmit as SMS when iMessage was unavailable for use

    1. Go to Settings > Messages > Send as SMS and turn on Send as SMS.

    2. Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.

    3. Make sure that you can send SMS with Settings > iMessage turned off.

    Thanks,

    Matt M.

Thanks for the responses.  I was not able to find this particular situation in the troubleshooting pages, and did not actually need to go so far as a network settings reset.  My solution:  an operating system and app update on the receiving phone.  After that the messages app worked as it should.
