I have been having problems with my HP printer 4650dn for a while.
I have done all the usually updating etc and usually get round the problems, even if temporarily.
However, the duplex option has no disappeared from the drop down print menu, but will print duplex from a PDF.
Using OS X 10.9.3
Any ideas?

What program are you trying to print from? Some programs don't support duplex printing.

When did you lose the duplex capability? What's the lastest system you were able to print duplex with?
Do you use Time Machine to backup your Mac? What model Mac and system are you running?

I noticed the loss of duplex printing a few days ago. My printer had started playing up and I did do a factory reset which may be one explanation (although it is a duplex printer). I was getting different kinds of error messages when printing (from Pages) and so have been trying to sort that out (with intermittent success.)
I use an iMac (2.9 GHz Intel Core 15, if that means anything to you.) and yes I use Time Machine.
The latest system I was able to print with was 10.9.3 - I am not using the latest Pages though as when I did update I lost too many functions, so I used Time Machine to reload my old version of Pages and was able to print duplex after that. I have just tried to print a WORD doc this morning double sided and had to turn it into a PDF, so it is not just Pages.

Have you tried deleting the printer from Print & Scan, deleting the driver, redownloading it, and setting the printer up again? Perhaps the driver got corrupted when you were having problems with the printer.
You can also try resetting the printing system.

Yes I have done all that, will try again though.
InterestinglyI cannot print duplex from Preview or Pages, it seems only Apple programmes are affected.

Were you able to print duplex from any Apple application at any time after you installed Mavericks?
Yes I have been printing two sided quite happily.

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk. Reboot normally and try again.

Here's what I did when I had printer problem after installing one of the Mavericks updates:
1 - locate the HP folder in the HD/Library/Printers folder:
2 - enter Time Machine and go back in Time to when you were able to print via duplex with the Apple apps.
3 - select the hp folder and restoe it. Select the option to "Keep Both" just in case.
4 - reboot.
5 - try printing again.
Do you have a HP printer utility that will let you set printer options? If so launch it and check to see if there's an option to turn duplex printing on or off. Might be as simple as that. My HP utility application is located in my Home/Library/Printers folder.
My goodness it was as simple as that - thank you all, so much has been repaired en route to finding a simple tick box had been unticked somewhere and sonehow.
