iTunes 7 upgrade fails: The folder path 'C:' contains an invalid character

I see this message when I try to upgrade to ITunes 7.

The path selected is C:\\Program Files\iTunes (the default one).

Also tried to manually browse to this directory, in case something was wrong with default path.

Also tried running Registry Mechanic in case there were strange characters in any of my registry settings.

Nothing helps.

Does the path really contain a double backslash after the colon? That would be an invalid path. In the Folder name edit field of the Change Current Destination Folder dialog delete the second backslash so that the the path is exactly:

C:\Program Files\iTunes\

hmmmmm. that error message corresponds with the InstallShield 1324 error. (although the new 7.0.0.70 installer isn't InstallShield-based, previous versions were ... so we can still get InstallShield errors spat at us as 7.0.0.70 tries to uninstall the previous version.)

so we'd better check on the InstallShield advice, just in case:

Error -1324: The Folder Path Contains an Invalid Character

yeah, we do seem to be getting a wee spike of these. (i can think of three i've seen on the forums, which is a bit unusual.)

let's try getting an installer log to the Apple Engineers so they can have a look at this.

1. Open a commnd prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
3. Type in a space, then the following line:
/l*v C:\log.txt
4. Hit return.
5. The installer will create a log file:

C:\log.txt

Find that file and send it to this email address Put the URL to this discussion thread into the email, so that the person who gets it has some context … in general, give as much info as you can.

gaaaah.

would you mind poking another installer log through to Roy, Chris?

with this one (so you don't get lost in the flood of different reports), make sure to include the following info in the email:

- A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
- The username you are using in the thread
- The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
- A concise description of the issue you are seeing
- The exact text of the error message you are seeing

Hi Chris,

We need to take a look at some of the values in your registry:
1. Choose Run from the Start menu.
2. Enter regedit and click return.
3. Navigate in regedit to HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\
There should be a folder there labeled "Java Development Kit."
4. Select the Java Development Kit folder and choose Export from the file menu.
5. Make sure Selected Branch is the option selected at the bottom of the window.
6. Save the file and send the file to me.
