Maybe your iPhone has not been signed in with iMessage. Go to message in settings and log in.

messages is an Apple only service, the ipad does not support sms/mms messaging, you need to remove the iphone link in your wifes iphone contacts (set it to mobile in contacts). That way when she sends to you it will send sms instead of messages.

Sign Out of iMessage

This is the suggested method for removing your mobile number from iMessage.

Note: iPhone 5 users should perform this process before switching their mobile number from the nano SIM to the microSIM™ used by the Samsung device. If you have other iOS devices (another iPhone, iMac^®, iPod^® Touch, iPad^®, etc.), iMessages sent to your Apple ID will continue to be received on those devices but not on your Samsung device.

1. Insert your SIM card into your iPhone and power the device on.
2. Touch Settings > Messages.
3. Touch Send & Receive.
4. Touch your Apple ID.
   
5. Touch Sign Out.
