Yep. I agree 100% with John's rabbit hole statement.

Late 2013 supports 4K, but not at 60Hz .... only supports crummy 30Hz or 24Hz. And it should support 2560x1440 @ 60Hz via the mini display port.

I have the same model Mac as the one referenced in John's original question. My external display is the last Cinema Display model that Apple was selling before the first Thunderbolt Display came out. I have had some issues trying to drive that display, but they come and go. I am tempted to get a genuine Thunderbolt Display, with the hope that that will make a difference, but maybe I should try a non-Apple monitor, just as John chose to do.

Thanks!

Well, I may have answered my own question.

I found this link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6008?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Which seems to imply that 60HZ can only be done with Multistram (MST) DisplayPort, and that the Macbook Pro Retina (15" Late-2013) and Mac Pro (Late-2013) both support it (with the 10.9.3 update, correct hardware/firmware, etc) but doesn't say anything about Macbook Pro Retina 13", which I fear means it won't work.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

-Mark

I too went down this rabbit hole and can tell you definitively that the max resolution late 2013 13" rMBPs support is 2560x1440 (1440p) @ 60hz and only through the thunderbolt (mini display) port.

FWIW, I am running - and loving - the BenQ GW2765HT which works great out of the box at 2560x1440 with a mini display port -> display port cable bought off amazon.

I have my late 2013 retina Macbook Pro 13" hooked up to a Dell 27" 4K monitor P2715Q (intended for a custom built PC).

The rMBP can run 3840x2160 @ 30Hz only (with MST = Secondary) with DisplayPort. However, OSX Display preference does not have any text scaling option, so everything is unusably small. I have to settle for 1920x1080. The text is bigger than I like but everything looks sharp. Interestingly, I run Vmware Fusion 8 with Windows 10 and Windows shows resolution being 3840x2160 and I can scale the text to 150%. It looks great.

I tested with some youtube 4K videos and they look pixelated at times and jittery. It might be too much for the hardware to handle.

Yes, exactly the same experience as me... basically, 4k is only supported in a jittery and unnerving 30hz which was giving me headaches. I too had to go down to 1080p on a 4k monitor so I returned it.

The Benq 1440p (2560x1440) I am running now is perfect. I am not actually sure I would even want a larger resolution on this size of screen. It's got tons of space to put 2x apps side by side on the screen and looks sharp at 60hz. Very, very happy.

Good luck!

Hi John! Could you tell me if using the monitor 2k you can distiguish the pixels ? I cannot find a monitor for my macbook pro retina 13 (late 2013). I tried ASUS MG28UQ 28" 4K and had to send it back , since the maximum resolution looked blurred (the text looked terrible). At 2560x1440 on this monitor I had the same problem. Now I am thinking to try BenQ BL2420U 24" - I don´t know if the smaller size of the screen could work better for my mac. Thanks a lot in advance!
