I purchased the full version of garageband and want to use the amps on it with my electric guitar, I bought an adaptor that converts my guitar lead into a headphone jack and plugged it into the headphone socket. However I can't get a sound to play, do I need a special adaptor? Or am I not doing it right?

Temrhythm is incorrect. The headphone socket can be used as an input for your guitar. I know this is correct because I do it every day. You do not need to buy any 'special audio interfaces' or anything like that. However, you may need a special type of wire (don't know what it's called because mine was bought for me). I know there are various types and prices you can get; I got a basic cheap one and it works fine. It is a wire which has a large jack which connects into the guitar, a small headphone-sized jack to plug into the iPad, and an 'ofshoot' bit of wire attached to it into which you plug your headphones. They sell these wires online, and possibly in Apple stores, advertised as wires to connect guitar to iPad. Once you connect the guitar, make sure you turn the monitor on in garageband (it's just an option on the menu for the guitar track) or you won't be able to hear the guitar when you record.
Hi. Its incorrect wthat you try to do. Headphone socket is output socket. You need to buy som of special audio interfaces for iPad. You can find those here. Without audio interface you can't plugin you guitar to your iPad.
No, that is incorrect. I have explained why in a full reply to this thread. As a further aside for the OP, I notice that many of the products you linked to costs hundreds of dollars. It certainly isn't necessary to spend that much, especially if you're just recording rough tracks. You should be able to pick up a connector wire for under 40 dollars.

What you are describing is an input splitter. It will work on headset ports, that are compatible with the iPhone headset (three-pin jack), for example:

A more bargain-priced audio interface than the ones listed by Temrhythm would be the iMic. It will turn any USB port into an audio port. Recording with iMic in GarageBand
Only, some posters here reported latency problems with the iMic adapter.
