Q: Is my Express extending my network wirelessly or based on ethernet?

I just set up a new Extreme AC and reset my Express N by pushing a paper clip into it for 30 seconds, and reconfigured it in Airport Utility to extend my network, however, I am not sure if it is extending the network wirelessly or based on the ethernet cable that is plugged into the Express from my switch.

How can I confirm whether it is extending the signal based on a wireless signal or an ethenet one?

When I open Airport Utility it shows the globe with a solid line going from the Internet to my Extreme AC, though there is a dotted line going from the Extreme to the Express.

Thanks for any help.

Wirelessly. You'd hardly need one to extend a wired network. The router it's plugged into determines the wireless network being extended.

    1. Are you basing that on the dotted line going from the Extreme AC to the Express?

    2. The Express is plugged into a switch that is plugged into ethernet from the wall. I want the Express to get its internet directly from the ethernet cable instead of wirelessly to get the best possible signal. How do I do that?

    Thanks.

The AEX should be connected via Ethernet from its Ethernet port to a LAN port on the AEBS. It will get connected to the Internet via Ethernet. The AEX is then configured to either Join or Extend the network. This is always done wirelessly (it makes no sense for Ethernet.) The best wireless signal is if you choose to Extend the network.

    1. I guess I didn't quite get how this worked. Are you saying that I can not just plug an ethernet cable coming from an active port in a wall in a room into a switch and then plug an ethenet cable from the switch into the Express? But instead, I need to connect an ethernet cable from the Extreme to the Express to do what I want to do?

    2. What did you mean by "The AEX is then configured to either Join or Extend the network. This is always done wirelessly (it makes no sense for Ethernet.) The best wireless signal is if you choose to Extend the network."

Are you saying it makes no sense to put ethernet into my Express since the ethernet is coming from the wall and not the Extreme, and I will just have to do it wirelessly by extending the network?

    Thanks for your help!
