Q: How can I center image of desktop on PowerPC G4?

I recently bought an HP Pavilion 25xi flat panel monitor to replace an old Lacie CRT monitor. I am using it with both a MacPro (2007) running Mac OS 10.6.8 and a PowerPC G4 running Mac OS 10.2.8. The monitor works well with the MacPro, but when it is used with the PowerPC G4, the image is offset to the right by about 1.5 inches. The maximum horizontal adjustment only moves the image ~0.25 inches to the left. This results in truncation of a portion of the desktop on the right side of the display. There does not appear to be any way to center the image. I have contacted HP and tried all of their suggestions without any success. The HP person I spoke to ran out of ideas for adjustments on the 25xi and suggested that there might be some control within the G4 that would allow the image to be centered. Has anyone had this problem? Are there any suggestions for how to center the image. Note that when the G4 was used with the Lacie monitor, the image was centered.

Mac OS X (10.2.x)

It might help to list what you have already tried so we don't type it all in again.

I have been using my G4 since 2005 through a series of monitor changes but I don't recall any issues.  I think on my old CRT there were controls on the monitor itself for centering, but if you have those you have probably tried them.  I have to admit that all the monitors I have used are roughtly the same age as my computer, including my "new" (to me as of January) Sony 17" and it is possible the HP was never designed with a G4 in mind.

How is this connected?  Do you have an option to connect it a different way?

I presume you have tried different resolutions.

The 25xi has several options that were tried including "Factory reset" and "horizontal adjustment". Neither solved problem. The monitor is connected to the G4 computer via a VGA cable. The monitor is connected to the MacPro via a DVI cable. Although I have a couple of DVI to VGA adapters, they will not work with the DVI plugs on the 25xi monitor because the monitor DVI plug is missing 4 sockets that existing pins on the adapters go into (not sure why HP made their plug this way). If I was certain that this would fix the problem, I could clip the pins on the adapter, but I would like to hear some rationale for why this should work. Because of this plug incompatibility, I have no other way to connect it.

The display only works with one resolution 1920x1080

The VGA connector on the monitor is a dsub 15 female. The VGA connectors on the connecting cable are dsub 15 males with pin 9 missing.

The DVI connector on the monitor is the DVI-D (DVI Digital) dual link female.

The DVI connectors on the cable for the monitor are the DVI-D (DVI Digital) single link male

The DVI connectors on the MacPro are the DVI-I (DVI Digital & Analog) dual link female

The DVI connector on one adapter is the DVI-A (DVI Analog) male

The DVI connector on the other adapter is the DVI-I (DVI Digital & Analog) single link male

Well, the LaCie was VGA, so completely different.

The HP is likely Digital only.

I don't know this for certain, but I don't think the G4 is recognizing the monitor well & may not sync right or be able to do the proper refresh rate.

Yet I found this interesting if true...

You can connect any single-link DVI cable (DVI-I as well as DVI-D) to a dual-link DVI-I port. You can also connect a single-link DVI-D cable to a dual-link DVI-D port.

    However, you cannot connect a single-link DVI-I cable to a dual-link DVI-D port.

Actually the G4 is recognizing the monitor. The 95% of the image that I can see looks great. The problem is that the image (the desktop) has been translated to the right by about 1.5 inches. I cannot find a way to center the image using the controls on the monitor. I cannot find anything on the G4 that will allow me to adjust the position of the image.

Do you have any suggestions for moving the image horizontally. The monitor's On Screen Display allows me to move the image a small amount as I said above. I do not know whether there are any options on the G4.

Looking at my "Displays" preferences panel in OSX 10.4.11 I do not see any position adjustment.

None of the other resolution settings produce an image?

No way on the G4 to adjust, but possibly SwitchResX & changing the refresh rate...

    Might need an older version.
