When I recently encountered this problem (out of the blue) I checked Contacts/Preferences/Accounts. I discovered that the account described as "untitled source -- CardDAV" had somehow become disabled. Simply checking the "Enable this account" box rectified the problem. I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.5.

All my contacts are missing after maverick upgrade.
