How can I install Canon PIXMA iP6000D

I just replaced the hard drive in my MacBook Pro and cannot install the Canon PIXMA iP6000D that was working fine until the old disk died.

The Add function for the Printers & Scanners section of System Preferences tells me that "Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software."

Canon's website tells me "There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

So the printer cannot be installed.

One of these messages must be incorrect, since the printer worked two weeks ago...

Hi dlp1962uva,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are trying to install your Canon printer after replacing your hard drive on your MacBook Pro. It sounds like you have done some great troubleshooting by trying to install the drivers. I did some research on your printer, the Canon PIXMA iP6000D and it appears that this printer software is no longer available through software update.

OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download

Additional Information

Printer software no longer available through Software Update

The third-party vendor no longer provides software for the following models to download and install through Software Update. Contact the vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

The The Additional Information section where I found this information is at the very bottom of this article. This printer specifically is listed as a printer that is no longer supported by software update is the list under Additional Information. I would suggest contacting Canon to see if the printer drivers are still available through them.

I hope this helps,

-Joe

The Canon website insists that the driver for the PIXMA iP6000D is included in my version of the operating system (i.e.Mavericks 10.9.3). That appears to be untrue.

However, I have an iMac with the same operating system which is able to print to the PIXMA. So if I knew where to look for the driver file on the iMac (I need help on this part), then could I copy that driver file to the MacBook and install it?

The solution to this problem turned out to be fairly simple:

1. Go to the Canon website and search for PIXMA iP6000D.

2. Click on Drivers & Software.

3. Select Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 as the Operating System.

4. Click on Drivers.

5. Download the driver iP6000D CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.51.2.0 (OS X 10.5/10.6)

6. Install using the downloaded Installation Package. (You may have to change the Security Settings to run the pkg file. If so, rest the Security level after the installation is finished.

7. Print to your PIXMA iP6000D.
