iMac fails to start.

I have an iMac PPC using OS X 10.5.8. When I try to login, it accepts my P/W and the login screen goes away and a blue screen appears for about 2-5 seconds. Then it goes away and the login screen reappears. Keeps doing this no matter how many times I try to login. Have tried rebooting numerous times, but the same thing keeps occurring. What causes this?

The profile may be corrupted. If there is valuable data, you need to recover with one of these options:

There is the slight possibility a password reset may help for that profile, if you have the 10.5 installer disc that installed 10.5, or you can put the machine in Target Disk Mode with one that can edit the administrative password for it:

Note, fixing the password is possible from root mode, but you have to be really careful if that's only choice (i.e. not having another Mac or a 10.5 installer disc that is known to work with the machine):
