Driver for Casio Privia MIDI over USB?

I have a Casio Privia PX-400R. I'd like to use it with GarageBand as a MIDI input device.

The keyboard has a USB jack and comes with MIDI drivers for Windows. Casio told me to try contacting Apple directly about getting OS X drivers (?!), and Apple gave me a lecture about how the people that make the device should make the drivers.

MIDI is an open standard, so it would surprise me if there were no third-party, perhaps generic, drivers out there that would work. Any suggestions? Has anyone out there successfully connected a Privia keyboard to OS X via USB?

If the keyboard has USB, try plugging it in. On my MacBook, I use Hardware Growler (or something like that) to tell me when devices are plugged and unplugged. If you install it, you'll see what your computer recognizes the USB device as immediately. I bought an Edirol MIDI to USB device for my boards and I don't think I installed any drivers (I may have, but I don't recall for sure. Still, I've had a lot of luck with OS X just plugging things in and seeing if they work).

You may have more success with your keyboard, but when I plugged mine in it was not recognized by the "Audio MIDI Setup" utility. I have not come across a solution for this problem. The only option I have, as far as I know, is to buy a MIDI interface with OS X drivers ($40+) and use the standard MIDI connections on the keyboard.

This (dated) article seems to have some good information on MIDI in OS X:

I had tried connecting it and seeing if it worked. It did not. But, following your suggestion, I am looking at the SCSI devices in the System Profiler (via the "About this Mac apple menu item). One of the items is listed as "Vendor Specific", and has product ID 6802 and vendor ID 07CF. At www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids I find that 07CF is the ID for Casio, so that's my keyboard.

Still no luck in Garageband, though, so either I need a driver or I need to configure something in the OS.

Looking for MIDI in OSX help, I find Audio MIDI Setup, but as near as I can tell it is not listing my keyboard. There's an option to "Add Device" but it's not clear to me that this is the right thing to do (I will fiddle around with it, no pun intended).

There is also an Audio/MIDI panel in GarageBand preferences. This tells me "0 MIDI inputs detected".

Am I on the right track, or am I just wasting my time? If I can't resolve the problem soon I'll just return the keyboard to the store and look for a different model.

Thanks for any help.

More info. I got this response from Casio:

Thank you for your e-mail. As long
as you have a USB midi cable, A
program that uses general midi -
our keyboard should work with your
mac. However we do not offer support
on the midi and MacIntosh.

That makes me think things should be working, especially since the system profiler shows a USB entry for it. But how do I hook it up to GarageBand?

Attacking this from the GarageBand side... suppose it was all hooked up correctly and working. If I go into garageband, what would I have to do record music I was playing on the keyboard?

To use a keyboard in GB you select a software track and play.

Am I correct in this interpretation? I open a new music project, dismiss the software keyboard, select the one track that was created by default, then poke keys on the external keyboard, and I should hear them via the mac. And if I click on the red record button at the bottom of the project I should hear any keypresses and see the tone recorded in the track.

thanks for your input

Straight up, I would recommend against ever doing
business with a company that offers no support for
their product. If it were me, I'd return it ASAP.

Looks like a good rule of thumb in this case. I have received more info from casio and they now admit the keyboard won't work with a mac (solely because they won't make the small investment of writing a driver; amazing). So back to WalMart it goes.

Thanks for your help,

Sorry to hear about the added PITA, but, yeah, even if you could get it to work, you wouldn't know what problems await as other software is updated. Definitely stick to companies that offer full support for their products.

Do you have a particular feature set in mind? Many around here, including myself, have this M-Audio Keyboard User uploaded file It needs no drivers, you just plug it in and it works! I bought mine for $110, but as you can see from the link you can get it now for just under $88

It's a great little controller, and after 2 years I still have no complaints
