Help with 1G stone age Ipod

Have just updated to Itunes 7 cos as usual my ipod disappears from itunes whenever a new software update arrives - like clockwork each time!

Usually just restore the ipod and update and all sorted

This time, have got Itunes to recognise that the Ipod exists but it absolutely refuses to RESTORE the ipod for me so I can update it - it locks at 2 bars down on the screen then says couldnt be restored due to unknown error (1418)

Have tried everything from reinstalling itunes to playing around with the antivirus software, to running the ipod in disc mode.

Please can someone help - I have a Windows SP2 PC and a very old 1 or 2G Ipod. I know i should upgrade but it was a present and has a lot of sentimental value and cost a lot of money so I dont feel I owe apple any more!

Intel Centrino, Windows XP
