24 fps in a 29.97 sequence

Hi everyone,

I've got a frame rate problem...

I recorded my film on advanced 24 fps and inputed it into final cut pro 5 with the pulldown. Final cut recognizes that my footage is 23.98 fps in clip settings but I've accidentally edited my entire film in a 29.97 sequence! I try to copy my folder into a 24 fps sequence but all my fades and slow motion effects are gone. The film does not look how it's supposed to. Is my 29.97 sequence playing at 30 or 24 fps? Can I simply output my 29.97 sequence at 24 fps? Help! What do I do now?

Thanks,
Michael

yeah that was a typo. I did exactly what you said and I have that problem. All my motion effects are gone. There are some spaces between clips that weren't there before also. The sequence is not identical to what it should be. Is there some way I can just export my 29.97 sequence to 24 fps when I output for DVD or do I NEED to have it in a 24 fps sequence for things to work?

Are you guys related? Same issue.

So you copied your sequence, made a new one with 23.98 settings, pasted it and the transtions vanish, and there are gaps? That is the oddest thing I have ever heard.

As to what Pat said...about rendering. When you edited the 29.97 timeline, did you have to render each clip as you added it to the timeline?

no we aren't. The issues are slightly different.

In the 24 fps sequence their are some 1 frame holes, and some clips have a small clip before it that repeats itself. The entire edit has strange holes like that and messy clip repeats. It would be really time consuming to get the edit back to where it was originally.

So is there anyway in exporting to get it back to 24 fps or is getting it in a 24 fps sequence the only way? Are there any other options?

Please help.

Well, not to be harsh, but that should have been your first clue that something was wrong, and prompted you to figure out why that was. Maybe even come here and pose that question.

Since no one that I know of has done that, I am not sure what the solution is. I assumed it would be a simple case of copying your timeline and pasting it into a 23.98 timeline. That should work...and not require rendering of any kind. But why it is behaving like it is...is beyond me. Again, this has not come up.

As Patrick stated, use the Easy Setups when you first start your project.

This is not only in the Manual, but the Tutorials as well. Those are things you should have looked at when you first got this software.

And as to 24fps...you would never use true 24fps unless you shot on film and will be cutting the negative. 23.98 is for Panasonic 24PA footage, and HD material only. And if you are outputtng back to DV or other SD format, then don't use that setting. For HD and DVD output only.
