The picture you get while not using the AppleTV has absolutely nothing to do with the AppleTV at all. You are not using an HD signal.

It's not.

You want an HD converter box but those are no loner needed. They are used to convert analog broadcast (which are no longer used) to digital.

Even then, this would not get you the wide HD picture you are talking about., It would still be square (4x3).

In order to have 16x9 (wide) HD picture, you need a digital antenna or digital HD signal from your cable company.

You can use an outdoor antenna for OTA (over-the-air) broadcast, most of which is in HD.

You can only use the AppleTV to play;

• items in your iTunes library
• items you have purchased from iTunes store
• any of the channels on the main AppleTV screen

Yes, that is what I suggested.

except you don't need an outdoor antenna.

A digital indoor antenna will work fine in most places, unless you are quite a distance from broadcast station antennas, such as in a rural area.
