Convert RTF to Text and Save

I thought this would be simple, but I'm not sure how to do this. I want to convert a folder full of .RTF files to simple text files. I thought I could simply pass the files to TextEdit and have it perform a "Save As," but apparently, it's not that simple. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello,

You're on the right track. Just missing one step.

In TextEdit, go to the "Format" menu. Then choose "Make Plain Text".

Now, go to save (or Save As) and save your document.

Now, you'll have a Plain Text document.

I hope this helps.

Download this action and import it into Automator:
Convert Text. Create a new workflow with these five steps. You can, of course, tailor this however you'd like but it works as is.

  1. Ask for Finder Items
    Type: Files and Folders
    Start at: Desktop
Prompt: Choose the documents to be converted to plain text
    [x] Allow Multiple Selection

  2. Launch Application
    TextEdit

  3. Open Finder Items
    Open with: TextEdit

  4. Convert Text Files
Convert to Format: Plain Text (txt)
    Save Results in: Desktop
    Options
    [x] Show Action When Run
      (x) Show Selected Items
        [x] Save Results in

  5. Quit Application
    TextEdit    Save changes: [Ask]

Hello,

If you are looking for an automated solution, check out this program here:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Utilities/rtftxt.shtml

Or, from it's author's site here:
http://www.bluem.net/downloads/rtf2txt_en/

It will need to run in Rosetta on an Intel Mac. But, it should run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs.

I hope this helps.

Thanks. That looks like it will do the job. It doesn't speak well for Automator, however, that something as simple as opening files and performing a Save As text is beyond its capabilities. I'm pretty sure I could do it in AppleScript, but didn't want to take the time to write and debug it for a quick one-shot need. I'm disappointed that I couldn't knock it off quickly with Automator. Thanks for pointing me towards rtf2txt.
