can i change the genre for songs that i have in another playlist without me having to make duplicates of the song

There is only one Genre field per track. So if you change Genre, it will be changed in all playlists that include that track.

If it helps, you can put multiple words in the Genre field, e.g. "Rock, Workout."

If you stick to one thread, perhaps you may find a solution. ed2345 is the fourth person to offer help, and yet you respond each time by creating a new thread instead of explaining (in the first thread) why the previous solution hasn't worked for you.

But why exactly are you concerned about the genre anyway? A song can be in as many playlists as you wish, it has nothing to do with genre, unless you are creating Smart Playlists that use Genre as a rule of the list. If so, you have already been offered two solutions:

1. create a second copy of the song and edit that second copy to the second Genre.
2. use Grouping to cause the only copy of the song to be added to two separate Playlists.

By the way, creating new threads and thereby ignoring those who have offered help in existing threads is impolite.

and the song would be only in the third genre

Correct, but in iTunes if you search on "Rock" it will show up, and if you search on "Workout" it will show up. Ditto if you use "genre contains" in a Smart Playlist.

The problem (as you know) comes if you are sorting by Genre on an iDevice, in which case they are indeed in 3 different genres. It works better if you build the playlists in iTunes and then sync the device.

Nice! Why not go ahead and turn that step-by-step guide into a User Tip. Many users struggle with the basics of Smart Playlists.

I have tonight added a User Tip, having modified a minor error (that is - at least one!) and tidying up the prose of my original posts. I realise that perhaps I should have made reference to Smart Playlists is the subject title, but never mind, it's too late now!

User tips should pop-up in search results. And it is easy for other regulars to point them out. BTW you can go back and edit the title if you want.

As far as I can tell, everything is harder to find in the new layout. But as tt2 notes, we can direct folks to your new User Tip by its URL.

I don't know if you've been lurking in the lounge ed, but you can add /content onto a user or community url, then click discussions to get a layout where new content in an area is labelled in bold. For your own user account click participated first. Makes it a little easier to keep track of your active threads. Bookmark the useful layouts to save time.
