Hi, i just want to charge the battery sometimes before going to bed. I do want it to STAY off, and not have it think on its own and turn on by itself....very annoying. Can someone please help? Thanks
I Just tested this with my son's iPhone 5s.
and once off, it doesn't even show a charging screen.
once off it is totally off, plugging in to charge did nothing to it.
Thanks for your reply. I'd be ok with a simple battery-screen (i think on my friend's phone5 it's just a green battery light). However, on mine it boots itself up to where it's waiting for the 4 digit pin. A great way for someone to play around while I'm asleep. The way I've been getting around it is to first plug it into the wall, and THEN turning it off. That does the trick - but dare I forget to do it that way...so if i happen to forget this kind of chronological order then I'm out of luck, which often happens when I'm stressed with stuff and forget about little details like that...I figure there has to be a way to have more control over an iphone. though if I'm going to have to remember to put it in airplane mode, then I might as well just remember to turn it on first before plugging it into the wall (then finally turning it off again)....either way it puts me back to square one, since it forces me to remember something to prevent it from thinking on it's own.

My iPhone 5s will switch ON and charge when plugged into the wall even it was totally OFF.

That's not how my 5S nor my 4 works. If they are off and it's plugged to charge they restart.
Try again. If off, it should turn on when you plug it in to power. Make sure the cable and charger are working. Make sure the iPhone's connector is clean.
Also, AFAICT, if you power the device off when plugged in, it will continue to charge when off. My 4S does.
No problem. At least you found a solution that works.

I tested the phone again (after confirming the cable would charge the phone)
my son's 5s does not turn on unless I turn it on with the power button.
is it possible this is a network / carrier over-ride? We have AT&T I have no restrictions on the phones.
You can't. The charging is controlled by software in iOS, so iOS must be running while charging. You can put the phone in Airplane Mode if you don't want it to do anything while charging.
