How to relink files inside an avchd package ?

I messed up a library and lost a project, then I found a copy of it in the backup folder, now when I open the project it asked me to relink files, but a part of them are inside an avchd package. How to relink those files ?

Thanks

Hi,

Similar subject.

The background is this:

My editor is working with Premiere and sends me xml file.

I open the xml in FCPX (version 10.3)

All files are Missing files, which is normal, so I have to relink them, but ...

As the material is recorded with Sony cameras, so I see AVCHD bundle and thats it. I cant go further up to stream folder to reach the file to relink.

When I rip out the MTS file in finder and put it in the different folder then relinking works but I already know what ripped out MTS file does to editing speed so this is not my first option.

I tried to open xml in my Premiere and there everything was ok, i just double clicked AVCHD, then BDMV and reached Stream folder.

So how I can "see package contents" in relinking mode?

It is pretty annoying situation.

Hopefully there is logical solution for that.

Thanks,

I have 2 identical external hard drives.

Previous project I had folder with mts files (the files were ripped off the AVCHD bundle).

Then relinking worked nicely but made editing extremely slow.

What do You mean by relinking external media?

I can't relink the media as it is impossible to relink AVCHD.

When I edit other projects where I import the files directly to my project, AVCHD works perfectly.

Hi again,

I was talking about previous project, not this one. Ripping off the files made working with this project painful as ****.

I was sitting infront of the screen and watching beachball spinning and subtitle letters appearing one by one like 1995 I was looking at the screen of a PC 386 word document.

Extremely annoying experience. And now I'm in the start of next TV series, 12 episodes, and I really do not want to experience that again. Just sitting infront of the screen and helplessly looking at the spinning beach ball.

With importing the clips inside the AVCHD bundle exactly the same project was smooth, without beach balls.

That is the background.

So as I understand You suggest to rip off all MTS files from AVCHD bundle and relink those files?

And after that I have to optimise them, which means, that I create **** of a bunch new files (now I have 600 GB of material) just to make them work?

Instead of just to use the files inside the AVCHD bundle, which is just 2 clicks away, which FCPX does not allow me to do.

Is the truth that somebody just forgot to add the possibility in FCPX to relink the AVCHD bundle?

Or is there some other corporal reasons because I see no logical reasons?

So my question is very simple - can I or can I not relink my files somehow inside the AVCHD bundle or not.

And if not what is the reason? Just a bug, somebody forgot to do something or just a intercorporational BS.

I really do not want to turn after 10 years of working with FCP (both 7 and X) my face to Premiere just because of that stupid missing link.

kind regards,

Hello again,

Yes, I know they are different applications and that is the way I've chosen FCPX as FCPX has been more comfortable for me.

Speaking of garbage, then I thinkthat the users should decide what is garbage and what is not. What do You mean nobody want to use it? I'm using because I have Sony cameras, so basically I'm nobody?

Of course it would be easier to work directly with files but as one of worlds leading camera companies using it, then maybe there is an idea to think at FCP headquarters to make it easier for customers to work with those files.

How hard it is to say that, yes we know that this is a problem and we are going to fix it with the next update?

Rather saying that this or that is garbage and only possible way to use it comfortable way is as tricky as fixing the teeth through rectum.

And finally.

If FCPX is not suitable for this format, then Apple should say it out loud and clear - Dear Sony users, please do not use FCPX for editing.

Kind regards,

Come on man. AVCHD has been around for a long time and FCP from legacy versions to how has worked with, FCPX much better that legacy which required full conversion on import.

MTS is garbage for production. You struggled with it, right? It's horrible for production. Great for acquisition. Excellent quality, small file size. Pack it onto a chip, stringing data across GOPs, and using as the backbone an ancient MPEG file format. It's great engineering. Just those things that make it great at encoding and packing in the data in a small size, makes it horrible for production. How do you edit frame accurately when the image data is spread across 15 frames? How do you create effects or color correct when only one in 15 frames actually has complete information and no frames have complete color information. Nothing to do with Sony. AVCHD is used my most manufacturers in some device or other.

What FCP does to make this better when the media is imported correctly through its import process, is it rewraps the clips into QuickTIme. Doesn't help the codec and everything else, but it makes the frame processing easier. The GOP structure it rebuilds on the fly in realtime so you actually can see individual complete frames of video where there are very few. What both FCP and Premiere do in their own ways to make this happen is absolutely amazing engineering. If you want to use this media in FCP you have to do it the FCP way. That's all there is. Moving from the Premiere way of processing this media to the FCP way of processing this media is a major pain in the neck.

Hi,

I have NO problems when I import through AVCHD package (clip#XXXX not File XXXX.MTS)

Everything is smooth like knife through butter. Final result is also nice. No problems with added effects, titles and so on.

Pain comes when I have to destroy AVCHD bundle and import MTS files.

But obviously there is no solution.

I just have to decide now that shall I watch again spinning beachballs 30% to 40% of my editing time or I just forget

FCPX and move over to Premiere which I would not like to do because FCPX is much more comfortable and user friendly than Premiere, but on the other hand version 10.3 "upgrades" makes my decision much easier to move over because lots of "improvements" are total crap.

But this is another subject.
