Q: Time Machine fails - cannot make backup folder

For the past two weeks I've been having some major issues backing up my computer with Time Machine. It's become quite a process.

iMac 27"

Mountain Lion

I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.

For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups.

There is PLENTY of room on the drive.

The exact error message reads:
"Time Machine Error
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder
Latest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"

To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.

Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.

Below is a small sample of the report from the utility each one is dated.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this without having to purchase a new drive?

In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.

I searched the forums for a solution and found nothing helpful.

I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.

    Well, so far so good!

Backups are working on schedule even from waking up the computer from it's nap.

I'm probably jinxing myself by saying it looks like the reset of Time Machine did the trick along with the reformatting, but that's what I did and no errors yet since yesterday.

Again, I'm going to monitor and see how it goes.

And of course here we are an hour later and I wake this pig up to find the error again.

Would be nice if that pop up told you WHAT the error was!

I can safely say now it is only happening on waking up this computer from sleep.

I can't help but think this is a Mountain Lion issue. I upgraded from Snow Leopard in February this year and this is only happening since I upgraded. Well, technically since June.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate them. I am reluctant to buy another external drive if this is going to be the same issue with that too.

I'm half tempted to go back to Snow Leopard and reformat this whole computer.

    UPDATE

This was DEFINITELY an issue caused by upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.

Yesterday I finally took on Mavericks and the problem has not happened and Time Machine is backing up properly now.

Ha! I take that back. As I'm sitting here working it is happening again. So my original issue is still at hand and it seems no one else can figure this out as well.

I have the same problem with Yosemite on my iMac. I have changed drives and still same problem. Drives work fine with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro also running Yosemite. I have done some experimenting by changing drives between them and find that the problem is with the iMac and not drives. but I have found no one with solutions other than the ones you have been offered. It is a recent problem as the iMac is 2 years old and Time Machine was working well until the last 30 days, approximately 30 days after Yosemite upgrade.

Well that is very interesting. My Macbook Pro is still running Mavericks and it backs up just fine as well.

I've done everything you have and the iMac still fails the backup. It's a shame Apple does not address this issue. It's kind of random. If the machine has been 'awake' and I'm working, the backups work just fine, but if the machine goes to sleep for awhile, that's when it fails to backup. All I do now is force eject it and plug it back in and it backs up then or I force it if I'm going to be away long enough for the machine to sleep. You can't just eject it normally. It just doesn't. Says it's being  used. This tells me something is still trying to communicate (time machine probably) with it but it's stuck in some endless loop and it needs force ejecting.

I'm still not ready to upgrade to Yosemite on either machine. A 2 year old iMac should not be giving you headaches like that. These machines are not crappy "throw away" windows machines and you should expect them to last a long time and not have to spend $3K every couple years to upgrade due to age.

Have you tried a restart? Time Machine doesn't backup when the computer is asleep.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Thanks for the idea, I shall give it a try when I get back to the machine. This seems to be a recent phenomenon, because my "workflow" regarding Time Machine has not changed in the last 2 years. I love the simplicity of Macs/Apple but when a problem like this pops up it is frustrating to solve, sort of reminds me of Windows.
