Unwanted mysterious popup blocker

I click on to (legitimate) links on my gmail account emails using Safari browser. It doesn't take be to the website but instead have "Grrr! A popup blocker may be preventing the application from opening the page. If you have a popup blocker, try disabling it to open the window." I have disabled the popup blocker going into Safari -> preferences -> security and unchecking Block popup windows. This only happens in Safari. I have tried looking at my Gmail account specifications such as security and help but there is no remedy to be found.

This is a new macbook pro Retina 13 inch 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with OS X Version 10.9.3. I have the most updated version of Safari 7.0.4.

After investigating the problem for most of the day, and some help from someone in another forum, I figured out that the problem was due to some malware that was installed on my Mac when I installed something else. I removed it and now everything works fine.

The website that I actually used to help me figure out whether there was any malware on my computer is http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg/

Specifically, I used this page (http://www.reedcorner.net/arg/) to track down the adware that was on my machine and then followed the instructions to remove it.

Hope this helps

I couldn't use my Safari or Google Chrome without all of these ads popping up. It also infected my Gmail accounts. I couldn't open up any links within my emails in Gmail. I searched all over until I found your post today about this site: http://www.reedcorner.net/arg/ . Wonderful information and excellent adware removal tool! Thank you so much! You saved my Mac!

I had the same problem after stupidly installing MXPlayer. Besides not being able to open the websites and getting the message, I was also plagued with the unwanted ads for mac cleaner or something to that effect and others. I didn't know which apps were safe to download and didn't want to risk more problems.

I found a website that showed how to remove the offending/infecting files and paths (myself) that contain: vSearchProtect

This site has the list of unwanted files. Once removed, restart and empty trash. No more problems!
