Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

This one looks more like a "chuckle" than a "laugh"

Not really much of an emoticon user but I've got to agree with on that one.

I see you feel my pain (exactly!). It just doesn't do the job for me.....  And you are right! That's exactly what it looks like, a chuckle!

And the silly emoticon looks like a sick emoticon . Like the confused icon better, though!

That is the new sick emoticon which was added as a requirement in the ACA.

Well, that was considerate of the developers - anticipating what would be needed most by everyone, and all....

Stop spamming us. We the users are the ones that are seeing your post multiple times. If you want to complain to Apple then complain to them.

    Thank you.

    Gains:

    - Spell checker in the Reply box;

A spell checker was always in my reply window.  I distinctly remember it from the last software version because it was almost useless.  You could not add words to it and it flagged words such as iTunes as errors.  Not only that, but when they brought out the previous software it disabled my browser's own spell checker so it replaced something that worked almost perfectly on the fly as I wrote a reply with something the had to be called up separately and many of its suggestions were incorrect.  Pretty much the only good thing I can say about this new release is my browser's spell checker is working again and I don't have to use the one in the edit box.  Still, I'd trade that for the old software with all its problems.

    Dear Fellow Users,

    Keep the positive posts coming.

An Apple Tutorial for these new-look forums is accessible from the home page of Apple Support Communities New to the community? Start here.

    Gains:

    - Incoming Links at the bottom of this discussion is how I found a similar thread by ChitlinsCC. Hi CC, great minds think alike.

    - The Search feature automatically updates as you edit the search terms.

    - Advanced Search automatically updates as you refine the search criteria.

    - Advanced Search now allows you to choose only those questions that have been answered (but not necessarily 'Problem Solved')!

    New ways of working:

    Reply from gail from maine

    - I find it much easier to move back and forth from current posts, posts that I have responded to, posts that I have authored.

    - When looking at Content>All, I am not having any difficulty seeing what the current posts are, and

    - If I want to see if a post I have been involved with is updated, it is a quick click to the Participated link to see which of those posts have been updated recently, and which I have already responded to after they have been updated.

No way to tell new posts

A workaround is to receive email notifications for updated posts.

Open your profile then click Preferences then switch:  Email notifications for content I'm following ON.

    I can't find my discussions

    Reply from gail from maine

Click on Content>Discussions>Participated (for discussions that you have replied in), or Content>Discussions>Authored (for discussions that you initiated).

The forum software logs me out as I am composing a reply.

(Sorry, I can't find the thread to give recognition for this idea.)

Compose your reply in TextEdit or a word processor, then Copy and Paste into a reply box after logging back in.

Hint: the default Lucida Grande font in these forums does not take italic or bold in a word processor. It must be a feature of the forum editor that mimics italic and bold. Compose your reply with a font such as Helvetica to see formatting in your word processor.

    More gains or workarounds, anyone?

    Regards,

    Ian.
