Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

Screen Shot 2014-06-22 at 12.20.17 am.png

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

Yep. As you may know I was a victim of the axe. I will take that up in private via feedback to Apple (which, it turns out you were right about, but not helpful in the slightest)

Thanks for doing this. I've been looking for previous questions I posed and I haven't' been able to locate where they are yet. The old version was so easy. Can anyone help?

    Hi,

Again, not sure if this is what you mean, but if you click Content and then click on Participated in the left sidebar, you will see all discussions that you have commented in. This page can be sorted various ways - the default is newest updated first.

    Cheers,

Greenfox, Gail is right , up the "Participating" (but close) click "Authored" instead for your own questions (I guess I read you rightly?)

The URL with "/content" on the end (like my link above) should have the Authored tab selected by default.

You are correct ChitlinsCC - If greenfox was looking for his/her own questions, then "Authored" would be the option to select!

I'm not so sure about that. Lately Apple seems to be using a criteria purely of their own design. I am speaking not just of the redesign here but numerous other changes.

You seem to be a power user, so you might like a new Safari Extension I have developed just for ASC power users: ASCPowerTools.safariextz

It is currently at version 0.3 and is a work in progress. It changes any link to a "/content" version, adds a query string to display unread posts in bold, gets rid of lots of whitespace, and makes the site scale to your window. It won't be much help to people asking questions, but people who are really into providing answers may like it. It doesn't do anything with the Activity Stream. That seems a lost cause. Basically I just create a lot of bookmarks that are deep links (with query string) for the communities I want to follow. The extension takes care of the rest.

This extension is the result of a lot of work by people like a brody, turingtest2, and I am sure many others. I am just wrapping all the hacks into a Safari extension.

Good to know but that doesn't explain why martin's post (which I quoted in full) was deleted today. Look at the time stamps of my two consecutive posts, both from today, the evening of June 21 in the U.S. They are less than an hour apart. Sometime after posting the first (which martin replied to), while I was composing the second (which was a reply to martin's post) it went missing.

its there, then its not there, .....what? what? what?

    Resistance is futile apparently.
