Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

Screen Shot 2014-06-22 at 12.20.17 am.png

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

I'm still here. It's funny as Apple will not answer any questions but delete posts all the time. The moderation is political methinks.

I am positive less  information is not a good thing. The forum was modified for iOS users, not much more to be said.

It will be interesting over time to see if platforms like Mavericks and altering the forum to accommodate IOS weakens the overall  situation in terms of how people relate to Apple.

Also now when you post instead of seeing the post you have to scroll up to view . Well, at least you do on a desktop.

Because this new version of Jive adds the edit function that means it was designed for iOS? Other than that it does not really look any better on an iPhone than the last one and maybe just a bit worse with the new font. If Jive was going to do something for iOS users they would create an app and put it in the App Store.

(Given the income percentages between the Mac and iOS though gearing the platform towards iOS users would actually make business sense.)

In the old format the page numbers would all be displayed on a discussion topic so that you could just click on each page at will whereas now there are direction arrows after a few numbers. Is there a way of  getting to the last page without clicking on the far right arrow forever to get to say, a page 12?

    Hi CC,

Some of these things seem a little rudimentary for veterans (referring to "use the Back Button" for instance)

Sorry, I didn't mean to talk down to anyone. It wasn't a lesson in how to use a browser, just a tip about the forum navigation buttons going to the default view.

If this discussion becomes the basis for a User Tip, then newcomers will welcome such tips.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    Hi CC,

On the MyStuff (Your Stuff) page...

Don't know if it is a gain or just the first time for ME

The List Actively Updates right before your very eyes! No Reload, nuthin.

Neat. (That is if I am not still in Wonderland)

Don't worry whether something is a gain. Good to post it. I have goofed on a couple of things I thought were gains. But in a way, if I can now find them, that is a gain of improved layout!

    Regards,

    Ian.

I was thinking of the Numbers 3 update. Previous versions had a clever way of sorting tables that automatically adjusted formulas. Refugees from Excel sent feedback to Apple asking for the Excel method of sorting. Now we are stuck with Sort that does not adjust formulas; formulas refer to wrong cells or non-existent cells and complicated workarounds are required.

You seem to be a power user, so you might like a new Safari Extension I have developed just for ASC power users:ASCPowerTools.safariextz

Many thanks for the ASCPowerTools extension and the compliment! I have installed it, but no changes yet. (Maybe I need to restart my computer, but I would rather catch up on replies to this thread).

    Regards,

    Ian.

Except that for me, right now in this topic the "Latest reply" link doesn't work right. Instead of taking me to the real page 5, where currently the latest reply is the last of three in a row by Yellowbox, it takes me to some intermediate page where the last reply shown is one from martin, the one beginning with the phrase "In the old format the page numbers would all be displayed..."

I don't see this in all discussions. So far it is limited to some but not all of the ones that have grown to five pages long. (I have started a discussion about this in the private Lounge section. Those with access to that can use this link (I hope) to see it. I would appreciate it if those with that access who are seeing the same thing in this discussion would mention that there. Squeaky wheel, & all that....)

The moderators occasionally make mistakes -- after all, they are just as human as the rest of us. But having had the opportunity to read some of their comments in the private Lounge section, I sincerely believe their only goal is to make sure users are following the ASC terms of use & doing whatever else they can to make these forums as pleasant & as useful as possible for as many people as possible.

In fact, they are often more tolerant of minor ToU infractions than some of the high level users with Lounge privileges, who sometimes get frustrated about the minor (& occasionally not quite so minor) rants that are allowed to stand after being reported to the mods by other users.

    Yellowbox,

I have a workaround for my own authored question "... Jump to Last Post ..." that you may wish to turn into a tip. I am reluctant to call a workaround a tip because I'm just a newbie ;-)

The workaround is in a reply to my own post that can be found here:

    Hi CC,

I looked at your "Jump to Last" post.

Thanks for posting a link in this "positive" thread (nice alias for this thread!)

Please don't call yourself a newbie. I looked at your profile, and anyone who used an Apple SE/30 must be a guru!

    Regards,

    Ian.

    martin from,

You may have answered my question to you (nestled in there I might add) posed in a reply to B C -B but I will assume not.

Did you receive the "No Reply" eMail from Apple notifying you that your post had been removed?

If NOT, then it may that PlatoniusVeritas is right in that SOME post are just disapppearing.

Your post was not in any way offensive, - nor contain rants or complaints (see below)

I have yet to take on Apple Hosts over MY post. They said in the eMail:

    Hi James Jordan (ChitlinsCC),

Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities.

We removed your post Re: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments because it contained rants or complaints that weren’t constructive. We understand wanting to share experiences, but these forums are meant for technical questions that can be answered by the community. <=[ BOLD accent is mine]

It appears that the Host was a bit subjective in my case. I have my own theory, but I'll take that up with them in private via Apple - Support - Feedback

    Look forward to your response

    CCC/JJ
