Q: Could This (new discussion format) Be Any Worse?

I've been participating in the Apple support forums for a good many years. They have been very useful and I've supplied a number of useful support answers. But now it's pretty much all gone. It's very difficult to find specific things and it's now impossible to see, at a glance, how many people have both viewed and replied to individual threads. That's critical for identifying big issues--especially those that accompany a signficiant operating system upgrade. Further, the text is so large that much less information can be displayed on a computer display. Finally, when you go to Apple Support your display is completely taken up by big square blocks--can you say "Windows R/T?" I guess all good things come to an end.

The best that Apple Discussions ever was was two changes ago. The previous iteration was tolerable even though it was confusing for newbies.

You have to got to safari view and Zoom out --- each time you access this site so yes it is for tablets and iphones - so sad.

Zooming out helps only partially, since it does not change the proportion of white space or eliminate the wasted vertical space.

No it wasn't always necessary to log back in.  Usually it would be a while after closing your browser before getting logged out.

Thank you for confirming my memory. I now have another complaint to add to the list I will submit to Apple.

You're welcome.  On the bright side at least we can finally send smiley faces from our iPads.

You may find Firefox the better browser.   Logging in and out is one click, unless you park a spare screen in the dock.   In which case you often stay logged in.

Moreover, the Safari menu > Zoom out exercise is also unnecessary.   My Firefox Communities screen fits my 20" Mac as well as it ever did.

Here's an example of the lunacy of this new design. Why, in the title of the thread, is "Worse?" on its own line? The title ought to be allowed to occupy the entire width of the page. What a waste of space, both vertical and horizontal!

But now "Worse?" is not on a separate line! What's going on? Is Apple responding to my complaints?Screen shot 2014-06-29 at 4.55.25 PM.png

    Scott, et al...

I am replying to OP to catch everyone's postings (includiing my own)

I am gonna be delicate as I have Turned Over A New Leaf

I have said in the past that it appeared that A p p l e did the Graphic Design and that JiveSoftware was the backend... I was wrong.

It has been said that Jive servers host this community site. I am not so sure as I can find no evidence of that fact.

If one merely visits JiveSoftware(dot)com, one can see that they too have their own support community. It is EVEN MORE minimalist than this one. There is no indication in their "services rendered" offerings of hosting.

It is clear that the agreement between A p p l e and JiveSoftware must specify that Jive can't claim A p p l e as a valued client in its marketing. (no reference, anywhere except in the Jive support community) https://community.jivesoftware.com/welcome

One look at the above link and one can see where this all came from.

Target audience design was determined by Jive.

I apologize to A p p l e for anything I said that seemed in any way disparaging. I was analyzing as opposed to investigating.

Doesn't mean that I think this is good for most of us.

    I'm out...

And now "Worse?" once more appears on the line with "Could This (new discussion format) Be Any".

    I give up!

I've got the title all in one line but the Re: keeps appearing and disappearing. I'm afraid to look what it may be now.

You see this above:    Branched to a new discussion

It means the 'gods' are watching this thread, with lightning bolt in hand.

When I click on "discussion" in Branched to a new discussion I get a message saying I'm unauthorized to see the new discussion. Are any of you able to see the new discussion?

Click on branched to a new discussion. It's the new home for deleted posts. This thread appears intact. If the Gods are watching they're having one good laugh.

I see that "Re:" appears in one of my screenshots above but not the other. FUBAR!
