Q: Apple Cinema Display 23" Aluminum model abruptly stopped powering on and no power light but recognized by machines

I actually have a big issue that's stressing me out with my Apple Cinema Display 23" Aluminum model from about 2008

It's had a small intermittent issue where after a while of use the greys would slightly flicker. I should have brought it in then. A genius friend at the time said was probably the inverter cable. Now all of sudden 2 days after a day of use use it just went out. No power light nothing. But it IS detected under system profiler. And tried both display ports on my mac pro. Even my laptop and nothing. But still is detected.

I called Apple and reset the SMC and nope. They wanted me to bring it in and said I would. But let them know there is a lot of other people out there with similar if not the exact same issue with these models. I brought it in and the uninformed floater said it was the LCD panel. I don't think so since there is no power light displaying an error and there are other telltale sign pointing to power of some kind. It wasn't the brick since they used another one at the store. Has to be the PSU, Inverter Board and/or the inverter cable. Which is gonna be spend to diagnose and repair myself.

Also this happened after using the USB hub ports on the back for a while with 2 devices a mouse and a griffin wheel. I think the port drew too much power and fried whatever that powers up everything. To the computer it is online…???

Any input? I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!

or internal PSU

I got sick of looking at my beautiful gigantic cinema display sitting on my desk collecting dust and taking up space doing nothing, so about a week ago I decided to order a new Power Supply Unit (PSU) and try my luck at installing it...  I am happy to report my monitor is working again!  The PSU looks like a different brand than the original, but works just fine.  Quick start up, no random black outs, no more plugging-unplugging.  Parise the lord.

I got it from DV Warehouse:

661-6048 Apple Power Supply 250W for LED Cinema Display 27" 614-0487 - NEW (661-6048)

$149.00

I followed instructions from iFixit to take it apart (Took about 30 minutes to do in all):

It helps to have the propper Torx screwdriver/bits and suction cups to pull the screen off.  Also if you decide to do it yourself, be careful with the PSU, I belive they hold a charge and can shock you.  I wore rubber work gloves as a precaution when touching it.  Also keep some windex, lint-free paper towels and a swiffer duster on hand (The fluffy kind with the handle) for when you reassemble it.  It's really easy to get dust trapped between the glass screen and the LCD.

should also add I tried another machine and at the store they tried another brick. so it's internal and I do not think it's the LCD.

so leaning toward inverter and cable. possibly PSU… or BOTH

ALSO… I've been a longtime Apple fan and user, was even an employee for a while, but this and some of the way the company is headed is making me look elsewhere. Or dream up something else.

The genius was very lackluster and smug about his decision without properly diagnosing the situation I think. Things have definitely changed. Not for the better.

    DAMMIT APPLE!

    I miss you Steve...
