Airport Wifi inconsistent connectivity - why?

Airport keeps dropping connection to the internet. I know its not the router because every other internet device I have is working smoothly but on the Mac the network status shows it is intermittantly connecting to ISP, Internet and Server.

I suspect that this must be a hardware problem rather than software but I wonder if anyone else has had experience of this? And if so did you find a fix?
