GarageBand 10.0 on the Mac does not have the Smart instruments, that GarageBand on the iPad has.
However, you can get a kind of automatic play:
You can use use your iPad a s a remote control for GarageBand on the Mac, but this will not add the iPad instruments to your Mac.You can download "Logic remote" from the App Store for free. There is also a link in the GarageBand menu on your Mac.
Why doesn't the osx version have the smart instruments? That's one of the main features!!! For me anyway...
I have an ipad 2 with an audio interface that can't keep up - but works fine on my macbook pro.
I have the remote from ipad to imac, but there's no function there either for the smart instruments.
The Arpeggiator is rubbish when using acoustic guitar / bass etc... Drummer track... nup...
Surely it's only some samples included in the ipad version that can be transferred to the mac?
Thanks
Dan
I cannot tell you why. But GarageBand on the Mac never had smart instruments; it always offered plenty of readymade loops for backing tracks. That was no problem on a Mac with a large disk. On the iPad, iPhone the memory is more restricted, so these devices have the smart instruments instead of thousands of samples in a loop library.
Until GarageBand 10.0, there was not even a drummer in GarageBand on the Mac.

No, the smart instruments are not simple samples. They are programmed instruments, that are relying heavily on the touch screen and simply have not been programmed for GarageBand on a Mac.
I managed a workaround... kinda... I made the basis of the song on the ipad, then shared it in iCloud to the mac... Bit of mucking around, but it works!
Yes, that will work 🙂 Only it is one-way transfer. You cannot send the GarageBand Mac version back to the iPad.
I wouldn't be surprised if that feature would show up in GarageBand for OSX sometime in the future. The Autoplay are just patterns that are modified to some degree by the user input. The output is a MIDI Region that is played by a MIDI Instrument. That's why you can edit those Autoplay pattern once you recorded them.
Recording them and open the Project in GarageBand on the Mac is the way to go.
Some of the Touch Instrument features that are unique to GarageBand for iPad (and not GarageBand on the Mac), can still be used on the Mac version of the GarageBand by using the iPad app "Logic Remote". It lets you use most of the Touch Instrument interface on the iPad to play the instruments on the GarageBand for Mac version. A little bit of both worlds. I wrote the only comprehensive manual for Logic Remote, "Logic Remote - How it Works", that explains everything for that app.
Hope that helps
