have a file that I cannot open and not sure what application created the file
the icon is a white envelope with a stamp and return address and the address field is YOU; implies it is a letter
BBedit opens the file but all is gibberish no matter what encoding I choose
suspect it is ?email file or ?archive
how might I identify the creator of the file?

Check the file's type and creator codes with an application such as Creator Changer, http://www.info-mac.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=3041&p=3042&hilit=+creator+changer +#p3042.

Creator GVCi and type RcD3.
But now cannot find who is GVCi and what is RcD3 on the web.
Must be there somewhere but cannot find so far.
Any help with this?

so figured it out
GVCi refers to GlobalFax associated with a Global Village modem
and the old GlobalFax application opened the file
