Font replacement: Keynote 3.01 + Myriad Pro and Myriad Pro Condensed

I have noticed after I assign a font to some text in Keynote, save the file, not use it for a few days, re-open to make changes that what was Myriad Pro Semibold Italic and Semibold Regular switches to Italic and Regular. So I thought perhaps if I disable those two fonts it would "find" the right font. But instead it used Semibold Condensed and Semibold Condensed italic.

I use FontExplorer Pro, but have tried troubleshooting by putting the fonts into my user/fonts folder. The same problems occurred.

If Keynote had a find/replace feature or proper style sheets it might be an easier fix. But alas, they've dumbed it down to the point where no one can properly fix things.

Thoughts?

I'm not the sort to know the first thing about looking at the xml file. But, is the problem within that?

Have you tried disabling Font Explorer completely just to see if the problem would go away? Of course, working without it for you would probably be too much hassle, but at least then you could contact the vendor so that their next version would adhere closer to what the OS expects.

If it STILL doesn't work, then what template are you starting with? I could try the same thing here to see if I could recreate it.

Hi

Suffering almost exactly the same problem as you - plus I do not use or have FontExplorer Pro on my system.

I started with using the Gradient template - Which uses Gill Sans as its min font - changed that to to Myriad Pro / Myriad Pro Bold etc.

After closing the presentation and reopening it - the body fonts change to Helvetica Greek Inclined - but this does not happen on all pages. The Header also changes to Helvetica. (Helvetica was not even part of the original template).

Have changed all the fonts on the template pages. Then
I have changed the "free" text box and adjusted it in template mode and used the option "Format:Advanced:Define Text for All Masters".

None of these things solve the problem.

I am using this presentation tomorrow on a big pitch and this is a very annoying that a fundamental issue like this does not have an easy fix.

Who has the time to go through each slide and adjust the fonts over and over again.

Please can some one help - URGENTLY

If you control-click on the presentation package (after making a copy of it) you should see "Show Package Contents". Choose that and you'll be looking at everything that makes up a Keynote file. Double-click on index.apxl.gz and this will unzip your xml file into index.apxl. If you drag and drop this onto TextEdit, it will open, but won't be very readable. What you'll want to search for is "font" or "myriad" to find out what the correct XML understood name is. THEN do a search for "helv" to see if you can find the name of the incorrect fonts. THEN, do a search and replace to swap all the wrong names for the right ones and see if that creates a file that will open and have all the right fonts. Not sure why the fonts aren't "sticking" but maybe this purge through the XML will help. One more thing, if you want to try a few then test it, delete the index.apxl.gz file. This will force Keynote to use your unzipped version.

MAKE SURE to do this on a copy, because if your search/replace has an error in it, you can easily create a file that will NOT open.

Thank you so much for you very detailed advise.

I have followed it to the letter.
An now the "free" text does work as Myriad Pro - but at 40 point size instead of 26. But I can work with that for now.

Removed all mention of Helvitica-GreekInclined and replaced it with MyriadPro-Regular in the XML file. Done the same for GillSans.

Now the "free" text does work as Myriad Pro - at 40 point size instead of 26. But I can work with that for now.

But after closing the presentation and reopening it the new "free" text reverts back to Helvitica-GreekInclined and the header changes from MyriadPro-Bold to Helvitica-Bold.

Where else could the presentation be getting its info from or is there a bug in the software.

If you then SAVE that presentation, does it change the XML? (Make sure to save as a new file when you test or else it'll overwrite!)

Do you know if you're logged in as an admin user or regular user? This is so weird I'd even say try creating a new user and see if the same problem happens under that user. If not, use IT to present with then come back and try to suss out the rest later. Anyone else having htis problem recently that's seeing this thread, have you resolved your strange font issue?

It's probably not been addressed because it's hard to fix something that can't be seen. I can give an explanation of a problem here, but if a programmer isn't seeing it, then there's a loooong process of determining what's different between my system and their test system. At one point, it was determined that an OS upgrade/Keynote version combination caused a specific problem that couldn't be seen otherwise. Once that was known, the problem was able to be fixed.

For example, let's try to re-create the issue in a controlled way. Create a presentation now with three slides. Put some Myriad text on each slide, something like Slide One, Slide Two, Slide Three, then save the file and archive a copy (right click and choose create archive of...).

Then, open the original immediately and see if anything has changed. Then open it tomorrow. If it still looks the same tomorrow, leave it for a few days and try re-opening it. If you see the problem, double click on the archived copy and try opening it. If the "protected" version has the same problem, then you more than likely have some systemic problem. If the "protected" one opens up as you originally left it, then there's some weird stuff going on. 🙂

The systemic problem means try things like creating files under a different user, save to a different drive, things like that. However, if the files are actually different, well, I don't think I'd know where to start then!

I'd like to report that I've found a fix. (knock on wood.) At one point I tried removing Myriad Pro from Font Explorer and putting it into my user folder, but the problem still remained. However, yesterday, talking with a friend, he explained that simply putting the font into my user folder doesn't add it to the database (DB). Although I didn't really follow him I decided to try it out. So I double-clicked on the fonts and "installed" them into fontbook. I have had zero font replacement problems since. Only one day, but still this is good.

I now see that I really need to read about how fonts work in OS X as it is a huge scary quagmire. Being that I'm prone to be a font control freak I know I probably create a lot of problems.

I should add that the fonts even act differently in the type selection palette in Keynote now.

Before, installed in FEX or dragged into my user folder, when I'd click on a font to select it, sometimes it would bounce to a different font. However, now that I've "installed" them the font I click on is the font I get.

I'd like to add that I did finally dare myself into cracking open the APXL file and performing a find and replace. (A different font missing issue however) It wasn't as scary as I thought. However this still seems counter to all that Apple claims to be: simple, easy, quick. I'll keep my fingers crossed they include a find/replace font feature in the next release.

Thanks all for your ideas and assistance.
