Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort on Dell Monitor not working using Thunderbolt

I have a Mac Pro 2013 that I am trying to connect to two Dell U2414H monitors. I am using Apple Thunderbolt cables to connect from the Thunderbolt / Mini Display Ports on the back of my Mac Pro to the Mini DisplayPorts on the Dell monitors but the monitors do not see a signal. I made sure I'm on the right input on the monitors but nothing. I even tried using only one monitor and it also doesn't work. It knows there's a connection but does not see a signal. But when I do use a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (the one the monitors came with) it does work. Problem is those cables are too short for the location I need them and I already spent $60 on Thunderbolt cables and would hate to have to spend money on longer Mini Diplayport to Displayport cables. Does anybody know if a Thunderbolt cable should work and how? It was my understanding that a Thunderbolt cable also acts as a Mini DisplayPort cable? I contacted Dell and they said they don't know how the Mac computers work....Thank you.

Just what Thunderbolt cable did you purchase? Thunderbolt 2 is optical.

ALso see:

Can this be used as a mini display port cable?

Like on the older 27" iMacs.

No, according to this support page, you can only use Mini DisplayPort cables, not Thunderbolt with the older iMacs.

Thank you for the reply. Just to clarify I'm not using an older iMac I'm using the newest Mac Pro 2013 (looks like a trash can). Does this make a difference? Those ports are either Thunderbolt or MIni DisplayPorts right? Also I have a Thunderbolt cable I bought from apple that says it works with Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 ports on your Mac.
