Why is mapping services eating all my data?

Just got off the phone with apple support. The guy said to turn off location services, let your phone's battery drain until it's dead, then fully charge it to 100% and that should solve the issue. Gonna try it today and see if it works... i'm on a 5s

You are not addressing Apple.

This is a user to user forum.

The only way maps uses data is when you are using the app.

Maps are not stored on the device in Apple maps or Google maps, the maps are downloaded as needed as well as any traffic data.

I am having precisely the same problem. Currently in Vanuatu (island group in the south Pacific) where I purchased 2Gb of data on a 3G network here. To my shock, within two days I had used almost 450 Mb of data, almost entirely due to system services and primarily mapping services. I did not use maps, neither Google nor Apple, ever since arriving here, so I really do wonder what could possibly justify gobbling up so much data. All location services are also turned off, as are app background refresh. I have resorted to turning of ALL data when I do not actively use it to prevent these so-called services from abusing my data.

Data usage past 48 hours:

- Skype 10Mb

- Personal hotspot 50Mb

- Safari 12Mb

- WhatsApp 1.2Mb

- GMail 2.8Mb

- Banking apps <1Mb

- System services including iTines 34Mb

- MAPPING SERVICES 342Mb ???????

Not using the maps app at all and this is what i constantly get. I too am suspicious of Apple trying to update their maps but at their customers expense

Talk to your carrier about getting some leniency on your data... but disable data for Apple maps, that's the only way around it.

Oh, and use Google Maps instead.

As much as I don't like Android, I may have to switch... this is costing me too much money
