Excellent resolution.  Thank you.  I did discover only wifi and cellular cause the crash.  You can turn Bluetooth on while in airplane mode.

Execellent work around. Thanks for that. Let's hope Apple actually fix the issue though.

I don't allow control centre to work when apps are running so have had to enable control center for the time being but this is a pain having to start this app in airplane mode, wait, swipe the control centre and turn on the phone.

C'mon Apple. Check the millions of podcast app crash reports being sent in.

IT's not a fix.  It's a work around and it only works sometimes.  I need my phone ON and listen to podcasts at the same time.. Airplane mode isn't the answer.

This is also happened to me. I live in Brooklyn New York. I did deleted and reinstall the app. Bye-bye Unplayed episodes. But it is still happening. Judging from the comments happening to everyone so I guess I feel better now? Thanks a lot, TC.

And the real joke is going to this link for troubleshooting this problem: iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open

It just sends you through all the things we've tried and tell you to contact the app developer which is Apple.

Clearly, this Podcast app crash is worldwide and widespread. Someone at Apple seems to have forgotten how to do regression testing.

For Apple's information: my configuration is the most current version of iOS (7.1.1) for iPhone 4S and Podcasts version 2.1.2 (586).

The airplane mode workaround doesn't measure up because the iPhone is then no longer a phone.  How long will it take Apple to revert or correct the mistake? Start timing!

Looks to be fixed here in the UK. All is now updating fine when I start the Podcast App.

Nothing done at my end so Apple must have fixed something on the backend - iCloud issue maybe?

I've been VERY unhappy with Apple for some time over this app, largely starting when they spun it out of the music player and started trying to force us to stream everything.  Dear Apple: THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE FULL CELLULAR COVERAGE EVERYWHERE THEY GO.  I do not want streaming, I do not want it being charged against my data plan.  I want absolute control over my phone, but I can't have that anymore with them wanting everything to go through their cloud servers.  I want to download my podcasts through my iMac then sync them through iTunes, and that is all I want.  If some people want to stream everything, fine.  Let them.  Hopefully they have an unlimited data plan and live in an area with fantastic coverage, I DON'T.  I live in rural New Mexico, and any time I leave my house to drive somewhere, the probability is that I will not have signal.

SO GIVE US THE ABILITY TO DEACTIVATE ALL STREAMING FOR THE PRODUCT!

This is just inexcusable.  I love my Mac products, and this is only the second major problem that I've had, the first being when they changed Address and Note syncing.  Just totally inexcusable.  I've been in IT for over 30 years, I guess it's time to crack open the books and write the app that I want to get away from this POS.

@Cloudster:  Your points are well taken. Podcast is among Apple's worst apps.  You may be happy to hear that you can control the streaming behavior with a number of options provided in "Settings" --> "Podcasts"  The options include disabling "Sync Podcasts", disabling "Download Episodes" and disabling "Use Cellular Data."  Download enough episodes when you're in wi-fi range, and enjoy them on the open roads in the Land of Enchantment.

BTW:  The app's crash on opening behavior seems to have disappeared today.

Yeah, I've seen and contributed to the one-star ratings in the iTunes store.  I've tried turning off the streaming options, and then I'll fire up the app or the music player and I'll get the 'Turn Cellular On' option.  Apparently trying to be emphatic with the options just doesn't jibe with what the programmers think you should be doing.  I've also had problems with things silently changing, and I don't know if this could affect my podcast settings.  For example, I shovel all the telemarketers that call me in to a contact called Stupid Telemarketers and give it a silent ring tone with no vibrate, and on more than one occasion the ringtone has reset to a noisy one.  I don't know what's going on there, but I suspect a silent update being slipped in.  I'm not changing the topic on yesterday's podcast bug, just pointing out that sometimes things change without my intervention.

I think they reverted or fixed the back-end podcast problem yesterday evening, when I learned of these messages around 9pm MST last night, I started experimenting with the app to reconfigure it (after deleting and downloading it again) and found it was stable.
