OT: Just curious— I've also had trouble with dictation since Sunday. Today was impossible. Anyone else?

You needn't leave it on Airplane mode. You can switch it on and off, that should do it.

Due to a complete lack of any notification or indication Apple have attempted to resolve the issue or even care, I'm finally giving up on the Posdcasts app. It has been a pile or crap since they pulled it out of iTunes. Synch has either been broken or sporadic, sometimes I'll open a podcast to find it suddenly shows dozens of unplayed episodes moths old, that I have already listened to or marked as played, and now this bug, having to go to airplane mode just to start the app is a real pain as I mostly listen in the car, and this kills my Bluetooth link, then I have to reconnect it again after getting the podcast playing.

Anyway, I'm now switching to Instacast 4.

Im done with this PoS app.

That's not really the point! It should just work.

Podcast was flaky before it's completely unusable with iOS 7.12.

Restart, un-installing, nothing works. Podcast will not work.

My issue has largely disappeared since the update.

I had this problem over the summer and it eventually went away.  Today (9/25/14) it started again.  Podcasts crash 1-10 seconds after I start playing them.  I put the phone (iPhone 4S running 7.1.2) in airplane mode and the podcast plays fine.

I have this problem after upgrading to iOS 8. I get "Updating Library..." for ten seconds before it crashes back to the home screen. Airplane mode does nothing. I've deleted every podcast off the phone (iPhone 4s), turned syncing off on both the device and in iTunes (latest version on latest version of Mavericks), rebooted the phone, re-synced podcasts back onto the device again (and various combinations of the previous steps), and it still does the same thing.

I didn't have any problems this summer, but the app started crashing yesterday.  All of the symptoms and workarounds match what everyone else mentioned.  I have decided not to upgrade to iOS8 for a while until they work the kinks out, but apparently the kinks creep down into older versions as well.

I had the problem this summer; it lasted for about a day, then went away.

This morning, suddenly, the Podcast app crashes upon launch. I have not updated to iOS 8; I still run 7.1.2 on an iPhone 5S. I have done nothing in past 24 hours except to sync with iTunes on my computer, which I do every day. Suddenly I cannot use the app at all.

I agree with others who long for the day when we did not have to use this piece of crap app to listen to podcasts. Podcasts worked fine in the Music app for me for years (and I've been listening to podcast for almost 10 years), but now that Apple has "improved" the scheme, it is garbage.

    In my humble opinion.

I will be eager to read what others' experiences are like.

PS: Putting the phone into Airplane Mode does not seem to solve the problem for me at all.
