how to open .number file on spss 21?

I'm able to access SPSS 21 through my university institution and I'm trying to open a file into the program, but there's no way for a .number file to open up. It's just not there in the drop down dialogue box of 'Files of Type'. I also do not have Excel on my Mac so what can I do to open up a data file to use on spss? Do I need to get Excel just so the data is easier to import into SPSS or resort to typing in the data myself? Why can't a file from Mac's Numbers app open up in SPSS?

Open the file in Numbers and then on the File menu use the "Export To" command to export the file into an Excel format and use SPSS to open that.

Also if you are going to be doing a lot of this and don't want to make it easier you could either buy Excel or you could use either https://www.openoffice.org or http://www.libreoffice.org both of which are free, can be set to save files in an excel format and have more capabilities or similarities to Excel than Numbers.

Hi Sofia,

Another idea (that is, if SPSS will open plain text files) is to select and copy the data in Numbers, then paste into TextEdit and save.

It's just a guess since I do not have SPSS

Thank you! Text Edit worked. I have spent over an hour trying to find a way by playing and by searching online tutorials and no luck, until your suggestion. I am actually trying to export data from SPSS to a file I can turn in for my Masters assignment. All tutorials are for Excel and Word.
