Yamaha P105 - Will it work?
Thinking about getting a Yamaha P105. From what I understand it has a USB port but no MIDI port. Does anyone know if this keyboard will work fine with GarageBand/Mac? Thanks 🙂

Hi ArtsomStudios,
Sorry to contradict, but there are Yamaha drivers for Mac and the P105 is in the list of supported devices. See: http://download.yamaha.com/usb_midi/
I have installed them on my Macbook Pro. I am in the market for a Yamaha P105 and the first thing I did was getting the drivers to test before buying.
Let us know if it works after installing the drivers.
The USB port on the device is called "USB to Host" (Host would be the GarageBand app) which supports MIDI. So you can connect the USB direct to your Mac. If it supports CoreMIDI standard then it should show up right away. Some devices come with a installer disk to install a Driver first.
You can double check with their spec sheet.

Hope that helps

Hi..
Sorry to say, but the p-105 will not work with a Mac. The reason being this f***ed up co. called Yamaha does not have the Mac drivers for it. I too have the p-105. It communicated midi messages to an Wndows PC (Microsoft-another f***all co.) after installing the drivers, but not to an MAC.
I don't get it. Why they haven't made drivers for MAC, assuming most of the musicians use a MAC.
ONly hope would be to wait till make drivers for Mac.

I want to connect my P105 to my Macbook and use GarageBand - could you please tell me exactly how you managed it ? Do you use a cable from the USB-HOST port on the P105 to USB on the MacBook, or some other method?
I'd greatly appreciate your help
Thanks
Peter
Hey guys
I did some searching and found another forum thread online that covers the Yamaha p105, Macs and GarageBand. I think it could be of use to you with the questions you have. That link is:
http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2084024/Recording%20p105%2 0to%20mac.html
For a general review of the Yamaha p105 I found the following video useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzJWWJPqGZU
That video contains a link to a review article: http://keyboards-forsale.com/yamaha/yamaha-p105-sale
These two resources won't help you with this specific problem it seems but are good overviews of the keyboard for people thinking about getting one.
Good luck :-)
I recently purchased the P105 and connected it to my MacBook Pro via USB cable. I started GarageBand and it worked right away, no driver updates required.
I do keep my OS up-to-date (which included an update to GarageBand) and it seems to work great. I lowered the volume on the P105 so you don't hear the sound from the P105's speakers and only from the laptop. I recorded a few tracks using the P105 with different instruments (e.g. synth, bass, drum kit) and it worked perfectly.
Plug and play Confirmed: 10.10.5 Yosemite+ USB to host cable+ a Yamaha P-105 digital piano
keyboard "just works" with Logic Pro X and with GarageBand...!!!
Just updating for Mid 2016. I have a P-105 that I was using for live gigging and decided to replace my M-Audio controller in the studio with the Yamaha. Very surprised to see that it had no MIDI out! (Never needed, never looked.)
However, as noted in this thread, I hooked up a USB cable from the back of the P-105 to the USB in on my Mac Pro and Digital Performer 9.01 recognized it immediately. I say "recognized" meaning there is no specific indicator in the input area other than "any", but it works as a "plug and play".
