Mavericks Finder becomes unresponsive with disks

I have been troubleshooting this issue for the last week and a half and I have no idea what's going on. It has something to do with Finder and disks, but I have searched and searched and can't find any answers.

Running Mac Pro 5,1 with Mavericks 10.9,3 with 10Gb RAM (2x1Gb stock + 2x4Gb), SSD for primary OS drive, 2 TB HDD for Home folder. Have a few other HDD's in the Mac Pro and an external drive for Time Machine

Problems include;

  • Disk Images no longer unmount
  • Hard drives (SSD, Home HD, Bootcamp drive) no longer list contents in Finder although Time Machine drive, and 2 other HDD's do list contents
  • Disk Utility freezes when launched (Freezes at Gathering disk information...)
  • When trying to reboot, Finder becomes unresponsive and can't quit, when force quit, hangs on Grey screen pre-spin progress indicator and required hard shutdown (power button for several seconds)

Tried fixes (in order of trying);

  • Reinstalled fresh copy of Mavericks
  • Switched HD for Home folder (it was giving me SMART warnings)
  • Switched HD's around within the Mac
  • Zap PRAM
  • Installed Mavericks on a single drive and things seemed to work fine for several days, so I thought it was my SSD
  • Replaced SSD and reinstalled OS, But now after a day it's doing it again

Other info;

I am running CrashPlan which seems to be able to read the disks and back up files (so it seems)

Time Machine seems to be backing everything up on schedule

I can run Terminal command "diskutil list" and all the drives show up

I can mount new dmg files, but the contents do not show up but the drive does show up in the Terminal command

When I go to eject them, they stay shown in Finder but are no longer listed in the Terminal command

Activity Monitor shows Disk Utility as hanging, but no other odd indicators

Memory Pressure shows low green in the graph

When I hard shutdown and startup again, everything works for awhile perfectly, but then the problems start showing up

It seems that it could be a computer hardware issue, but I don't know what to test.

Thoughts, ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I ran the Apple Hardware Test, Extended, and no errors or problems were found.

I tried running in single user mode fsck -fy but that just came up saying the drive appeared OK

I then deleted all invisible folders on my boot drive and home hd, leaving only "Applications", "Library", "System", and "Users" on the main drive, and leaving only Users->my name-> "Downloads", "Movies", "Music", and "Pictures"

Then I reinstalled Mavericks to eliminate that there was any garbage in those invisible folders.

I check today after work, and same issues coming up, Can't see anything in Bootcamp or Home HD, disk images not unmounting, Disk Utility hangs on "Gathering disk information..."

Looking through my log since Last night, here are some things that I don't know what they mean

I get the first two lines a lot in the log, and occasionally the third line

I booted into an old drive that is in the computer, and deleted all invisible files. Then reinstalled the OS. My thought was that something was corrupt when I moved files from the old (what I thought was failing) drive to the new one, thus causing some sort of conflict that could be resolved by reinstalling. I had moved my main folders using terminal and the rsync command. But I'm thinking that it's something in one of the folders that I did not delete that is causing the problems.

How wrong was I to do that? After the reinstall, all those same files and folders came back.

Jun 27, 2014 9:07 PM in response to cassidys

If what you say is literally true, you destroyed the installation. But I don't know whether it is true. For the moment, let's make the optimistic assumption that it is not. In that case, I suggest you uninstall "Paragon NTFS" and see whether there's an improvement.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

Jul 1, 2014 10:24 AM in response to Linc Davis

I never installed that application.

Tried a clean install (erased using Disk Utility), created links on the new drive to "Downloads", "Movies", "Music", and "Pictures", not using any previous settings or system files or libraries.

Installed only the following programs.

Chrome

Transmission

MS Office 2011

Photoshop & InDesign

Toast Titanium

Crashplan

Twonky Media Server

And it still happened.

Updated to newest OS, still happening. Rebooted, cleared console, checked in the morning and it happened again. If its in console, it has to be in this time section.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Looks like it's CrashPlan that is the problem.

After reinstalling the OS yet again from scratch, (erased the HD through Disk Utility in recovery mode) I reinstalled all programs except CrashPlan. I read in a few places that cloud based storage programs were causing problems (like DropBox, Google Drive and Synology Cloud Station) so I wanted to test if CrashPlan was causing problems. I was able to run 2 days without any problems. I then installed CrashPlan and within hours, same problems came back. I've since opened a ticket with them to have them figure it out.

This is the information I found in case it could help anyone else, along with my EtreCheck that I ran before I installed Crash Plan. I couldn't post one once I installed CrashPlan since I couldn't load anything in the "Checking disk information" portion.

I hope that helps someone here. Post the report for assistance, but try the above first.

Root cause of this issue: Mavericks has some changes that cause stacks to misalign (for non-technical people - memory corruption and hence the crash) in a popular library called mach_inject. This has already been fixed in the library, see: https://github.com/rentzsch/mach_inject/issues/5. Apps like Dropbox and presumably Google Drive are going to see this issue until they update to the latest version or have this manually patched in their code (which Dropbox did since 2.4.5 it seems).

There's already a long thread about this issue, however Synology has yet to address it. I believe SMB2 is at issue here and others without Cloud Station. I did submit a support ticket to Synology to only get the reply that they cannot replicate the issue (weird).

Yegor, please submit your support ticket. The more that do will raise more supprt.

Here's the Synology thread http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=194&t=80301

Can't open Disk Utility as it hangs on "Gathering disk information..."

Can't unmount disks from Finder (Finder Hangs and can't restart)

Can't view contents from some of the mounted disks

Can't attach files in emails, when accessing disk it causes program (web browsers) to freeze

Jul 28, 2014 1:31 PM in response to cassidys

Turns out it wasn't CrashPlan directly. There were some files on my BootCamp drive that were not able to be read by CrashPlan or even Finder. I tried copying some files from my BootCamp drive in Finder to one of my other hard drives, and Finder gave me an error saying that the files couldn't be read or written. I booted into Windows, created ZIP archives of the files and went back to the Mac side. I was then able to save the zip files to CrashPlan. I also reformatted my BootCamp drive, (which was a SSD) in the process, but I did a direct copy of the drive to a HDD. CrashPlan stalled out on those same files on the copied version of my Bootcamp drive, so it looked like it was the files themselves, and not the drive. Haven't done any additional testing as everything is working fine now.
