install mountain lion on a late 2013 iMac (currently running mavericks)?

I would like to install Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on my 27" iMac 14,2 currently running Mavericks 10.9.2?

Your iMac may have come with 10.8.4 so 10.8.5 ought to work. However, I don't think the Mountain Lion installer would let you overwrite Mavericks for a downgrade. Rather, you'd need to wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install. I'd suggest following these instructions for entering Recovery Mode and see which OS is offered for installation. If it's Mavericks, try the Internet Recovery option to see what the originally installed OS would be.

In any case, before you start installing or erasing, make a full, bootable external clone of your current installation.
