out of software memory

I have a iMac late 2009 with 12GB ram, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 322GB free space and OS X 10.9.3.

My problem is that I often have to reboot my machine because the machine "is out of software memory".

Need help to fix this.

Anybody?

Neither Bing nor Google finds any existing reports of an error message with the text "is out of software memory" — which is very unusual. Well, other than the search engines finding this discussion, real soon now. This lack of matches in the search engines implies that the software involved that's issuing that message is very unusual or that this error almost never happens, or that the cited error message text is not the exact text of the message. (With computers, these sorts of exact-error-text details do unfortunately matter.)

This means the core here is figuring out what software is issuing this error. (This is also not a message I'd expect from OS X itself.)

If you have a virtual machine around or an odd application around or if there's something being generated by some odd web content running within Safari, then this error message may or may not be related to OS X itself, for instance — identifying the package or tool generating this message is key.

Since this is Mavericks, launch Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities and go explore what your current memory usage is, as a starting point. That'll tell you how much free memory OS X is seeing, and what's using memory. The CPU display within Activity Monitor will also indicate which applications are active and using CPU time, and that might help identify the software that's issued the dialog box or error message.

If this is a dialog box that you're transcribing that error text from, you can press the Command-Shift-4 chord, place the reticule on the dialog box you're seeing, press the space bar (which will then highlight the window that'll be captured), and use the trackpad or mouse to click on the dialog box. The captured screen shot file will be named Screen Shot, followed by the time and date, and is placed on your Desktop. Then use the camera icon here to upload the saved screen shot file into the forums.

As for the few applications that start at login that you've posted, you can disable each in turn, and see if the error message then goes away. (None of those is an obvious trigger for this message, particularly given the text of the message isn't listed anywhere.)

You'll need to provide more data on the exact text of the error message (if what was posted wasn't already the exact text), and you may need to experiment; to try removing each of the packages that have been installed.

If Gimp was installed just before this all started, then that is an obvious candidate for the trigger, and removing it would be the obvious test.

As for alternatives to Adobe Photoshop, Flying Meat's Acorn is far cheaper than the Adobe Photoshop tools, can read and write various Adobe formats, and may well meet your needs — it's what I use.
