Life after Aperture

So with this news report, thoughts on what to do next?

"With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture," said Apple in a statement provided to The Loop. "When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS."

I stopped using Aperture for new projects earlier this year and have switched to Photo Supreme for metadata/cataloging and DxO for raw conversion. I like that Photo Supreme provides a solid capability for writing metadata to images—its database is only there for speed. Photo Supreme also provides a limited ability to extract metadata from the Aperture library and link it up with photos provided they're referenced.

Going forward, my plan is to convert my managed library into a referenced one and export processed versions of all of my images. I can then re-process them in DxO as needed. My architectural and high-ISO shots are about to start looking much better!

This is really a sad day. Apple really has time and time again abandoned the Pro customer, who supported Apple thru the hard dark days of past. Now we are supposed to use consumer grade applications to compete? This is a kick in the face, after all the support, training, etc.. one spent in Aperture, we waited so long for a new version and it is a shame we are left out in the cold. Can't believe I now have to buy Adobe Lightroom. 😠😟

Yes, I'm pretty sure that Logic and Final Cut customers are wondering when they will face the firing line next...Apple hasn't exactly been devoted to the professional community for a while. Even the trash can Mac Pro seemed like a grudging update after years of life support. Apple's culture of secrecy has never meshed well with the professional/IT community, which relies on stability, road maps and long term support.

Here's one I've seen before, which begins with some of the most discouraging words I can imagine: "Moving your workflow from Aperture to Lightroom is not difficult, and it doesn’t mean losing all the keywords and other metadata you’ve entered in Aperture. It just requires a little bit of thought and care."

Thanks all. I've been looking at Lightroom mainly because it's the only software that supports my Leica T files.

So I think that my plan is to continue using Aperture to finish off the backlog of photos I already have in it and wait to see what Photos brings next year. I'm hoping at least it'll be a good enough DAM that I can then use in conjunction with a RAW processing engine like DxO or Capture One.

And in parallel to that I'm going to start using LR for my Leica T DNG files since it's unlikely that Apple will be supporting it anytime soon (as they don't seem to have got around to supporting the Leica X2 which came out earlier and has the same DNG). I'm hoping that it'll be a realistic way to evaluate if I'm going wholesale over to LR or to another software if Photos doesn't work for me.

Good luck to everyone in deciding what they're going to do.

My hope is that Apple's new photo app retains the organizational assets found in Aperture and iPhoto. It wouldn't be the perfect solution but I'm prepared to use two apps: an image editor with robust adjustment tools and whatever the photo app is called in Yosemite for archiving and sharing.

If anybody has a good pro/prosumer app like Aperture (or Lightroom) sans the subscription to recommend please do chime in here.
