Finder EXPAND ALL and COLLAPSE ALL (with subfolders)

i deal with a lot of data and i would very much like a feature that lets me expand all folders (and subfolders) and collapse all folders (and subfolders). the reason i need this is i sometimes want to dig out all the contents of a set of nested folders or view them in coverflow (what an invention!!!!). if i do this manually it involves a lot of carpal tunnel inducing repetitive and very tedious operations and - conversely - when i am done i have to manually close up all these folders or finder (i believe) will remember to leave the ones that were open opened which means i either have to clean this up then by closing all the folders or i have to do it later when i open them.

i tried to address this about a year and a half ago and i can't recall if i got good answers to get this finished or not but i do know that some of what i said may be technically incorrect but when taken as a whole the system is glitched enough to cause a lot of repetitive work and the rationale is confusing enough to make it hard to figure out why it is doing what it is doing (if there is any reason except sheer oversight in any case).

THANKS for any help. my wrists are absolutely killing me as i write this...

The "Option" enhances what the clicking on the triangle does. So mega-expand requires "Option". Mega-collapse requires "Option".

Just Clicking on the triangle (no option) affects the triangle's folder, and does not affect whatever state the nested folders are in.

Expand/Collapse by Option-Clicking on the parent folder's triangle:

  • Option-Click on a folder will Expand (or as you say uncollapse) all nested folder under the folder triangle you clicked on.
  • Option-Click on the same folder triangle and all the expanded folders will collapse.

Expand, but do NOT collapse nested folders:

  • Option-Click the parent folder's triangle to expand a folder and all nested folders
  • Click the parent folder's triangle will NOT collapse the nested folders
  • Click the parent folder's triangle again and all the previously expanded nested folders will still be expanded.

So Option-Click on a parent's triangle will expand or collapse nested folders.

Just a Click on a parent's triangle will NOT change the state of nested folders. If they were expanded, they will stay expanded. If collapsed, they will stay collapsed.

hi bob. thank you. for some reason i was still learning the OS when i first tried to get this working.

so am i correct in seeing that Option Click on a folder will uncollapse all folders and subfolders (etc) and then a Option Click on the folder again will collapse everything so that when you open the folder again regularly the next time all the subfolders will be nested (and not un-nested) as they show when you uncollapse everything?

i am seeing this but for some reason i remember having some kind of issue with it last time.

THANKS

ok. yeah, thanks.

sorry this one i find a little tricky even at this late date.

if i am following you correctly here i think the issue that threw me was that hitting the triangle collapsed the folders but left the subfolders in the folder in their previous state. so it is necessary to use the Option Key when you do this in order to do a kind of Meta-Collapse...

THANKS
