Do you have iDVD?

Older iLife '09 on retail DVD has a compatible version...

If you own older OS X install-restore DVDs that had all that in them

you could try & see if you could use Pacifist to extract & install the

application itself from the install DVD, from the desktop. This would

by-pass the Installer's method and limitations. Depending on the

version of older iLife applications, iDVD may work with iMovie '11

or the kind of files it creates.

I'd try 'Burn' if the file is a Data file, to see if it could work.

Depending on the kind or type of file, the software answer can vary

since some can convert & burn a file, to some other supported type.

Third-party retail software may fill a gap in a situation where iDVD

is not available, if you have an application on hand. Roxio?

The most basic media recording software is a freeware 'Burn' from

an open source, it can do several things adequately. Hard to say if

it would be an answer to your question.

Yes I have iDVD, and I have already used it to burn a DVD disc of my iMovie project.

The reason I want to burn a data disc of the iMovie file is so I can email that file and have it dragged and dropped into "ProPresenter" in a distant location for a DVD presentation. This type of data disc is not playable itself, but when dragged and dropped becomes playable.

Do you know if I can use my built-in disc drive that burns CDs and DVDs to burn a data file of my file? I don't see "data file" as a choice in the iDVD menu. My DVD drive was factory installed and should be able to burn anything it is asked to burn. The question is how do I ask for a data disc to be burned from my iMovie project? I have not "finalized" my project yet. Does that matter?

Thanks for your help!

Peter

While I am not certain of how to proceed with the issue you present,

you could try that freeware 'Burn' to see if a second DVD could be

made from the content of the first one you made; or direct from the

source. With 'Burn' you can choose certain parameters to customize

the process and perhaps one of those you used in the first version is

not correct. The drag & drop file, or a working copy from the DVD,

indicates there may be a problem in the settings on the DVD but not

in the files themselves that copy off it and work OK.

I've been away from the computer for a few days & haven't missed it! 🙂

Have you tried the various options in the iDVD File menu such as archive project or save as disk image?

I've never heard of the Pro Presenter, so I'm not sure what format your project has to be in order to work, but the format has most likely little to do with your hardware - it's the software that dictates the outcome of any process. Burning a "data DVD" is a bit misleading as you can't email a DVD. Speaking of emailing, any video project will most likely be too large to be emailed as most ISPs/email providers have limits for attachment sizes.

Edit: You said you have the latest iMovie and are running 10.6.8? The latest iMovie version requires Mavericks (10.9.2).
