How do I open a zip file on my Macbook Pro w/ retina?

I downloaded a bunch of pictures from my wedding which were saved into a .zip folder. Every time I click on the folder to "unzip" it a duplicate folder is created. I've tried searching for the unzipped folder that people have said would be created after double clicking/unzipping the folder, but it's nowhere to be found.

When I attempt to open the "Staley Walters 8486.zip" file after it has been downloaded it creates "Staley Walters 8486.zip.cpgz" file. When I go to open that it then creates another "Staley Walters 8486.zip.cpgz.zip" file. There are about 700 pictures inside of the zip file that I have safely downloaded off of my photographers website...could the problem be the amount of pictures within the .zip file? I am able to compress and extract images and content within .zip files when I create them on my mac so I'm not sure what the issue is when I try to open a .zip file after it's been downloaded.
