Touch ID turned itself off, won't reactivate

Just as the headline sounds, out of nowhere Touch ID turned itself off. It's not that it's even rejecting my fingerprints--it's not even attempting to scan. If I go into settings, I can see that the toggle has been turned off for iPhone Unlock and iTunes/App Store purchases and all of my fingerprints are missing. When I try to switch the toggle on and go to add new fingerprints, I get the message "Failed, Sorry the operation was not successful. Please go back and try again." I've tried a few times and searched around a bit but I don't see anyone who's come across the same problem.
