I have an iMac with OS X 10.5.8 and Time Machine no longer finds the backup device. It had initially worked. I have checked the connections and restarted the backup device but cannot make it work. What actions should I take to correct this?

Thank you for the references. I checked all but found nothing that could help. Finally, I decided that the problem must have been a hardware failure. I have now bought a new disk from WD and Time Machine is again working. Thank you anyway.
