actual storage space of 64gb iPad mini with Retina display

Hello,

I have just bought an iPad mini (Retina display) with 64GB, however only 56.6 GB are actually available, that's more than a 10% loss of actual storage space. How is this possible? Is there any way to reduce the amount lost? Please help. Thank you.

There is a very simple explanation. You are not taking into consideration the operating system and preinstalled apps.

The overall total capacity is 64GB, but the operating system and the preinstalled apps take up the storage that is already on the device. This very same thing applies to all hard drives on computers as well. The overall storage capacity is never the same as the available capacity.
