Q: hook up tv for monitor

Sounds like you have them connected okay if the iMac sees the TV, and the TV input is selected correctly.

Looking around, I found this:

OS X Mavericks: Use a television as a display

If the TV is black or displays rolling lines

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays. Click Display, select Scaled, then choose a new resolution.

(maybe the TV can't handle the selected resolution?)
