I have several IMAP accounts which I approach from several machines (all OS X 10.9.3, Mail 7.3).
It seems that the sent items are not synched: a message sent from machine A cannot be found in the sent items of machine B.
How to solve this?

Try rebuilding the Sent Mailbox to see if the messages start to appear. Also look at the Mail Preference and look at the Mailbox Behavior to see if it is storing the messages to the server for sent messages. Also keep in mind that they may be going to another folder in the IMAP mail folders.

Hello Norm,
The issue came to my attention because the internal disk in one of my machines failed. I've since had the disk replaced and the environments are restored.
To my shame I've discovered that for this particular account the check box to store mail on the server was unchecked. 😊
This hard disk failing has taught me a few things...😉
So my next question is: how can I get the (local) sent messages into my IMAP sent messages - could I use Mail for this?

First make sure that you have backed up, but then just enable it to sync back to the server. Once that is done, you should be able to drag those messages that should be in an On My Mac Sent folder to the Sent folder that is setup for your email that syncs with the server and it will add those to the server.
